With anyone who's not a close friend, it's a real balancing act -- if I install these tires for $50 and this guy biffs it on the way home, am I going to end up on the wrong end of a lawsuit even if it wasn't my fault?...
Very true. And it doesn't even have to be the guy whose bike you worked on suing you, if his health insurance company gets wind of the chain of events they aren't shy about coming after you.

Tammy knows her stuff. She is a year-rounder and she does her own work and hands down I would trust her with mine. Kick ass rider too, on and off road.

I'd say the chances are excellent that you will.

I've always done side work and never had that happen.
When you do it for a living its a job like any and after 24 yrs my bikes are just work only time its fun is when i help out someone I ride/race with or someone on the side of the road/trail.

I own a house that I rent out and I've never had a tenant sue me either. I still carry insurance because it is a definite risk.

Not saying that it will happen, just that it can. And pointing out that even if it's a friend that would never dream of suing you, the decision may be made by people who don't care a fig about you or your family.
Every time I've had medical bills from a road racing crash Blue Cross has sniffed around for someone to go after.

Your best shot is probably Craig's list. I would have them do the work at your home while looking over his/her shoulder though. Giving someone the keys to your bike is probably not a good idea.

When I owned a sailboat the running price was $60 an hour for a marine mechanic to do the work and $80 an hour to do the work with you looking over their shoulder because the owner would ask so many questions that it turned into a mechanical class. I don't think the mobile mechanic guys have smartened up to this yet though.

Your other shot is to have someone at the shop/dealership come and pick it up...They probably have people who deliver bikes anyway. This is going to be costly though.

In our area some dealers will pick up a bike to work on and deliver it. I've never heard of a independent dealer doing it and guess you would just have to check around.
If I was a mobile guy and had to do the work with the owner watching I'd charge a premium too, for exactly the reasons mentioned above.
I find most people looking for an independent mechanic seem to expect someone to be at beck and call and work for essentially beer money. I saw enough people try that with my dad when I was younger to have a pretty low opinion of it.
