State-by-state motorcycle laws looks more comprehensive.

They keep getting it wrong on many lists about helmet speakers in Mass. They usually say illegal to use or possess, but I've never been able to find the citation, nor has a buddy who is a patrol cop.

The AMA link that Pat posted has been updated and now it says no earphones, yet in the past week, there are big electronic signboards on Mass. highways that say you can use one earbud.

I've pulled out my earbuds plenty of times in front of a cop who has pulled me over. None ever said anything about it.

Splatt's has a couple of errors about my state---the correct info is: no safety inspections are required, turn signals are required (except '52 and earlier model years), and motorcycles are expressly permitted in HOV lanes. The other stuff seems to be OK. The AMA listing is better.

A quick check shows a difference in mirror requirements for California. AMA says 1 is required, Splatt says left and right required. So I was curious about which was correct and looked it up.

V C Section 26709 Mirrors

Mirrors

26709. (a) Every motor vehicle registered in a foreign jurisdiction and every motorcycle subject to registration in this state shall be equipped with a mirror so located as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway for a distance of at least 200 feet to the rear of such vehicle.

Every motor vehicle subject to registration in this state, except a motorcycle, shall be equipped with not less than two such mirrors, including one affixed to the left-hand side.
