Default Death of the Twinkie... Hostess Brands Dead.... Union Strike Deals Final Death Blow

Well, I haven't eaten a Twinkie product in many years, but I was still sad to hear that Hostess Brands had thrown in the towel.

Here's a tip to union workers who might be concerned about their future: If your employer is struggling, and fighting thru bankruptcy, it might not be the best time to launch a strike if you were hoping to keep your job.

Unhappy twinkies

I don't live very far from the St. Louis plant that was shut down. I think both sides knew what was going to happen. The company pushed them into the strike, giving them an extra reason to shut down. The union workers knew this, but there comes a time when enough is enough. It was going to happen either way.

My brother told me that this was in the works for months. He even told me who was setting up to buy the Co. but I can’t remember who he said it was.
I did not like the brand after they changed the lemon pie tast.

I wouldn't get too upset about the end of production (aside from the 18,000 newly jobless) but I'm sure if you stockpile any of their products, they will be no less edible in a decade or seven.

I risk of teetering on the edge of "no politics", but as a brand expert, I think it's important to note that for the past 3-8 years, Hostess has been under the effective control of several Wall Street private equity firms including GE Capital, Silverpoint, and Monarch, with executive management consisting primarily of restructuring attorneys, financial executives, and a liquidation expert. Not one with any bakery management experience.

So it's fair to say that the strike made for a good opportunity to execute a fire sale that has been planned for years.

Twinkies will come back, and pretty soon, but look for them to be made in China moving forward. Private equity is all about maximizing return on capital invested.

Trying not to cry. I learned my colors from those little dots on the Wonder Bread package. Didn't work. Made me colorblind.

A not uncommon tactic, force a strike, shut the business down, sell it, move it to a right to work state (or China).
