I'm just waiting for the stories about illegal Twinkie smuggling rings based out of Canada to start hitting the US news.

(Twinkies are made under license here in Canada, so they'll keep on rolling out the bakery doors in all their golden goodness in spite of Hostess' troubles.)

Joe S.,
With all due respect, this is where people are mislead, I do not work for a Union, I work for the Company in which employed me...Unfortunately the Union is/was in place at said employer, leaving me no choice but to become a member if I wanted to be employed there.

The Union has never, and will never support my Family, nor pay me any wages for the work I perform on a day to day basis...
How do I work for them... they work for me (supposed to anyway), I pay them, yet I ask them for nothing... I am very competent at making rational decisions on my own, I do my job well everyday, and I do not ever need someone to direct me to do so, my attendance has been spotless for years...

The State of Ohio is not a Right to Work State, so when I needed a job, this was the best that gave me the opportunity to work for them at the time, it is a "Closed Union Shop"...See that, the first thing a Union does in this case, takes ones rights of choice away...hmm...for the people, I think not...for the money, why of course!!!

I am not at all surprised by your response for me to quite though, and to seek other employment, that is also a common Union Rep's response to people when they have no answer for them when they have an issue with the Union, normally in an aggressive manner, hilarious to say the least...Again, the Union is not the Employer, why quite the job?
The only thing a comment like that shows me is, "give us our way, or we will quite", guess what Union, you don't hold the cards when push comes to shove, the Company does...

Call me a "Company Suck Ass" if you like, but that is a fact, if the Business is not there, the Workers are not there, then the Union is not there...Which comes first...Seems easy to me!

My Family, and myself have been long paying Union Members for years, so I have been around their methods for some time now, I have found their methods of lying, stealing, and misrepresentation of their members needs to come to an end, it is costing all of us...

I do agree, Management in today's "Big Business", are no better than a Politician, stealing from the very people that brought them to the status and plush lifestyles they know so well...I only know what I read on this matter, I am still as passionate about this, but unfortunately most of this information is hidden from common folk like myself, the Union discussion I have facts, been living it for years...

I think you might have misunderstood me, I expect both parties, Union and Company to think hard about who their differences are really affecting in the end...Not just the people sitting around a table...Today's greed will not let this happen!

Before there were unions, few commoners had any job security or health insurance. Many families lived on the edge - it was a struggle to make enough $ in 40 hours/ week to make ends meet. A medical issue could bankrupt a family; long years of loyal service meant nothing about one's future with a company.

Wait, that's now, too.

And a few generations from now it'll swing back the other way again...

Human nature never changes.

I saw a Facebook posting where it said something like:
"Marijuana gets legalized at the same time Hostess goes out of business. Well played, America."

I get it, up to a point: I hated my boss so I made myself useful and learned new skills and applied for a different job within the company - skills which I can also transfer to other companies/jobs. When I can no longer stomach the mission of the business or I get tired of giving up unpaid (salary) overtime weekends and nights to implement some wild-eyed grand vision of a project by the VP/GM who is spending time with his/her children or out on the golf course, then it’s time to take my 401k and find another job.

Yeah, really, I do ...

Amen! My rights reside in life, liberty and pursuit of happiness!

No one owes me/not entitled to a job, a wage, benefits, certain hours, certain job tasks, etc...etc. If you don't like what you are doing, what you are being paid, or the benefits available to you, find another job or better yet, take on the personal responsibility of educating yourself (academic or skill) or starting your own business. Then, see what you think you "owe" someone for the skill set they bring to the table.

A substantial defined benefit pension (traditional pension) is long gone. Many companies still offer a modest defined benefit pension in conjunction with defined contribution pension (401K). I better stop before I delve into politics.

God bless all!

Well, I sat here for the last half hour and wrote several sizeable paragraphs on this subject, edited them, added to them, finally had the message ready to go, then just deleted everything. I guess it's best if I just sit this one out. Comments thus far have made for enjoyable reading though. Thanks.

I'll just say I'm always sorry to learn of loss of employment and leave it at that.

So you are a union member, unwillingly perhaps but a member nevertheless. You pay money to an organization you profess to dislike to keep a job. I don't really have a problem with it but lets call it what it is.

The Union has never, and will never support my Family, nor pay me any wages for the work I perform on a day to day basis...

I suggested what I think is a quite reasonable solution. If a person has very strong personal convictions and ethics surrounding something like a union (as you appear to). I think its perfectly reasonable to question how you reconcile working there. It would be like me (as an RN) working in an abortion clinic. Its something I feel I could not ethically do, regardless of the financial situation.

Call me a "Company Suck Ass" if you like, but that is a fact, if the Business is not there, the Workers are not there, then the Union is not there...Which comes first...Seems easy to me!

I've called you nothing, (nor did I preface anything with a phoney 'with all due respect' qualifier) you seem to want to take what I said as an attack though. Its not. If I attack someone they won't have any doubt of it, I'm not that subtle.

My Family, and myself have been long paying Union Members for years, so I have been around their methods for some time now, I have found their methods of lying, stealing, and misrepresentation of their members needs to come to an end, it is costing all of us...

If indeed that is what is being done, i never condone methods of that sort. I also don't condone methods of that sort from the management side of things. Of course that never happens, they are the good guys right?

I do agree, Management in today's "Big Business", are no better than a Politician, stealing from the very people that brought them to the status and plush lifestyles they know so well...I only know what I read on this matter, I am still as passionate about this, but unfortunately most of this information is hidden from common folk like myself, the Union discussion I have facts, been living it for years...

So because you think you have one side of the story, you conclude they are the problem because the other side is better at hiding their tactics?

I think you might have misunderstood me, I expect both parties, Union and Company to think hard about who their differences are really affecting in the end...Not just the people sitting around a table...Today's greed will not let this happen!
I don't think I misunderstood anything but thanks for expanding on your position.

I was proud to be a member of Operating Engineers local 3. The union offered evening classes to help train members so we could work efficiently and be competitive in the field of surveying.
