Folks in the USA leave the "U" out of a lot of words. I think it is to save money. I suspect Walmart started it.

Always sorta thought a poser was the guy who looks down his nose at your ride (regardless of brand/style) , and when you ask him what he rides , you find out that he doesn't. I've had it happen before......

By the way, I choose my gear, not by how it looks, but by how sexy I feel in it.
And all along, I thought you choose your riding gear by what the dog dragged up and dumped next to your bike.
And, yes, I have recovered from my introduction to Fidigity Pete and One Eyed Bob. Thanks for asking. I have a new found appreciation for street bikes, horsepower and, street tires but, I did screw up all my courage and preparation H the other day and take the DR out for a ride. After 3000 miles on that damned thing I keep an eye (unlike Bob I have two) on it lest it sneek up on me and force me to do something hateful again.

Of all the answers so far I think I like this one the best so far. Kind of reminds me of they guy at work who hates my trucks make and ridicules it daily even though his has been sitting in his garage broken for 2 months.

Would you use the word Poser to describe someone who rides a kawi Vulcan because its all he can afford and disses his own ride while wishing it were a harley? He does ride every day but is embarrassed to admit he rides a "jap bike".

I think this is more of a "bike snob", possibly also moving into the "wanker" area.

A while back I was in a dealership looking at jackets and a young guy came in to look at the leather racing gear. He asked the salesman if they sold the jackets that have to aerodynamic "hump" on the back, like in motogp. He, I believe, was a poser, unless he happened to actually be skillful enough that the greatest imprediment to his speed was the lack an of aerodynamic racing suit.

Another example of a poser would be the cruiser rider with the open face helmet who then wears one of those skull-faced neoprene face masks. "ooooo, look at me, I'm all scary!". No, you're a middle aged accountant whose wife bosses you around.

The thing about posers is I don't think they ever get the reaction they desire from thier posing. I think that most people can easily identify a poser and they then become the target of either pitty or ridicule.

I coincidentally watched the South Park episode entitled "The F-Word" just a few days ago. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to research the topic of motorcycle posers further, or to anyone who enjoys Harley bashing (which would include most members of this forum I suspect !)

Nah. I would label him a "status oriented dousch-bag". Being embarrassed by something you own is a pretty poor state of mind. It implies that your value as a human being is somehow tied up in the things you own. Admittedly it is a difficult midset to overcome since we are conditioned from very early on to think this way but surely a grown man should at least be able to laugh at his crappy car or whatever rather than suffering any kind of embarrasment. If, on the other hand, he has extensive experience of Harleys and knew first hand that they were far superior to his current bike then perhaps his disdain towards the Vulcan could be justified, but not embarrassment.

I recall reading an article about how the majority of American millionaires lived in average suburban homes and drove ordinary cars. They just accumulated wealth by maintaining the lifestyle they enjoyed rather than allowing it to expand to consume additional income as it became available. There is something lacking in a person who has to own flashy things purely to impress others.

I seem to be rambling and heading off topic so I will shut up now.

agonizing self-realization. I'm a harmonica poseur. Can't play the thing worth a crap, but I do look good in those trifocal Ray-Bans.

I get that, too, because I drive a Range Rover.

A poser is a guy who wears a Dienese one piece to Walmart, and parks his Honda passport minivan near the back of the lot.
