Default Man builds Lamborghini Countach

He built this in his basement. I was using "Stumbleupon" and hit a thread about it. At first I thought about BlackLab and his airplane. But then I read a couple of articles and he spent 17 years making this in his basement from SCRATCH making his own plans from a high end model. Then I figured it was an urban legend and I found the miller welding story where they talk about how he used their welder to make it happen. This is the most amazing build I've ever heard of. He made a subframe out of wood and bent the body over years of time to make it.

Why a wooden frame? I wonder how it well it will hold up to the beating simply driving the thing will impose?

I think the wooden frame was just used as a jig for shaping the body panels. In another photo you can see the steel framework.

This is an amazing and inspiring story---thanks for posting!

That's called a Body Buck.
Used as a 3D template to form a metal skinned body around.
You form the skin of the vehicle over it and then disassemble the wooden frame from the inside.

I like how he built it in the basement and THEN excavated to get the car out. I can only imagine the look on his wifes face when he told her what he was planning to do.

Now you've done it. The poor guy is going to get sued by Lamborghini for patent and copyright infringement.

He spends 17 years building it, and it will probably get totaled by some asshat on a cell phone.

Agree on both counts.

Re building a car with a wooden frame although a tad differently, Morgans are still built on wooden frames (pic from wikipedia).

The wood is really interesting. If you guys get a chance go to the Auburn/Cord museum in Auburn Cord Duesenberg museum in Auburn Indiana. It totally changed my mind about early cars.

They have a couple of the early fender molds they used to shape with made from wood with curvature lines on them. Here is a shot of the "prototype" they never meant to build in production. First the car itself

This is the frame. It's wood but totally a part of the car. All the early cars sported wood frames with metal skins.

Now for the sad day. These three pictures are part of a panoramic shot of a terrible accident. I believe it was in California in the early 30's but I could be slightly mistaken. It's believed a car backfired and caught a tent on fire and it swept the entire even burning every classic car there to heaps of metal. The gathering (if you put these together) at the left are the owners with the insurance company paying out cash to the insured. The prototype I showed in the first two photos burned to the ground in this accident and was rebuilt for their showroom before they went out of business.
