I'm still riding mine here in MI. It's been getting cold with morning temps around 30. Have Gerbings heated jacket liner and gloves and stay nice and warm.

I'm sure you did, we had a mild winter also, but the winter of 2012 in upstate NY was a freak of nature. I think we only had a couple of snow storms. Also, I'm in an area where the roads get heavily salted after the slightest bit of snow and I would prefer to not subject my bike to that kind of abuse. We have known to have short bursts of warmer dryer days when I could take a spin, but there also have been winters where some secondary roads are ice covered for weeks. Like the old saying goes "snow is like sex, you never know how much you will get or how long it will last".

I don't ever really put mike bikes away but I don't ride when there is much likelihood of snow on the roads. Cold is easy to deal with (gear!) but for me snow isn't that much fun.
Decide whatever is right for you and if you aren't enjoying it then don't ride. I don't think Stabil, etc are that big of a deal if you start with quality gas to begin with but do make sure to properly take care of your battery. ..Tom

Two words
Harden up. ================================================== ================= I rode to work all winter for more than 10 years, missed twice. Once, the town was officially closed, the other, eased out of the driveway, nosed up to the curb at the other side (with no further input from me) dragged the bastard around, muscled it back across the road, parked it, and phoned in I'll admit, that was on a TS 185, no torque and light, so I could stick a boot down to avoid falling over and in 3rd there was no chance of spinning up the rear wheel even on sheet ice. Quit when you get nervous , but it's amazing what you can ride in. Pete |

After what seems like weeks of endless rain and descending temps, I was looking forward to dressing a bit warmer and riding in to work for at least another couple of weeks of projected dry(er) days here in Toronto.
Had a quick run near the end of the day yesterday. Someone flagged me at a stop-light to inform me that my headlights aren't working. Sounds like some starter switch surgery may be in order, but without light or a garage, no riding to and from work in the dark for a while. Might be a premature end of the season for me.

You guys are awesome. I get it though, being a newb you pretty much have to go through the hazing process. Saying I'm going to hang it up for the winter and I'm called out as being a wuss for not gearing up. But if I posted that I was looking to gear up, even though I'm a new rider, I would be belittled for pages for not knowing my limits and I would surely die riding in inclement weather.
It’s all good, the video posted was inspiring, yet I'm quite content to keep my two wheels on warm dry asphalt for now. I think I’ve reached my lower limit at this point, any further and yes, it would require heated gear and farkles and I’m not prepared to spend $1K to extend my riding season. I’ve ridden snowmobiles in below zero weather so it’s not like I don’t know how to deal with the cold. But winter riding has new challenges like black ice and ice that form on the roads from melting snow banks which can be treacherous on four wheels not mention two. We're not there yet of course, but it's coming.

One thing most everyone will agree on though is that you've still got to ride within your comfort zone, no matter what the conditions. When I start getting more nervous about the ride, than enjoying the ride I call it quits. Sometimes that is due to ice, (or fear of ice). There are also perfectly nice days I've been out, and then turned for home just because I didn't "feel right". Not the bike, just me. Better to listen to that inner voice sometimes and play it safe. Cheers,

Yes and we would be happy to console your spouse and offer discount pricing to any surviving farkles
Really, black ice and even very cold tires will kill you
