Default Little bike fast or big bike slow?

I really enjoy putting around in the country on a big bike on back roads at about 30 mph. It is relaxing.

I like little-er bike fast. Long live sub 1000cc bikes. Riding like slug doesn't get the heart racing like boiling a small pot!
There is place for all types of bikes but cruisers on back roads are just obstruction for the frantic crowd!

I have the need for speed when I'm off-road'n. I love the adrenalin rush. That is why I ride off-road. I just can't help myself.

Now that I think of it, that must be your wife I get stuck behind constantly in her car - poking along until I have a chance to pass, then suddenly it's a race to not let me in front of her. Once the passing zone ends, so does the race and we go back to poking along.

A long time ago I read the expression "Its better to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow". It seemed wise at the time.

A while back I went on a ride through the "twisties", then headed home on the highway. I was surprised to find I preferred the ride home. Nice and relaxing, no need to concentrate much, just enjoy the warm sun, the wind and the hum of the motor beneath me. It was quite a revelation.

I have since decided that I actually ride to relax and I really don't want the stress or adrenaline of an exciting ride. I do occasionally get a bit reckless and accelerate hard, but it is for brief periods of time and usually in a straight line. Cornering at high speeds at the maximum traction my tyres will afford is not enjoyable for me. This seems to place me in the minority of riders though I sometimes think that a lot of riders push the limits simply because they feel they should be doing so based on some of the stuff that gets discussed on internet forums.

So anyway, if you enjoy just droning along and zoning out I think you want a bike that can do the same, i.e. big displacement. I sometimes wonder if I should be riding some stupidly huge cruiser, but I don't think I could wear the pirate gear and live with myself.

So yeah, I enjoy riding fast bikes slow.

I went from a well set-up FZ-1 to the VStrom 650.
I'll say I truly miss the passing power and the brief periods of cornering insanity. I miss being in MT or BC or AB and just running at 125 mph wherever the visibility allowed.
That said, running the V at 95 in those same locations didn't suck. Though wind protection is worse and side bags are worse, I get about twice the gas mileage and have more than twice the range, and I can still corner hard enough to have fun - probably harder than my eye-hand-foot coordination says I should.
And for my regular commute of 22 miles each way all at less than 60 and some on dirt roads, sitting bone straight upright, having a reasonable power curve, and having ABS truly rocks.
So, I'll gladly run the smaller bike harder for all the great things it does overall.
