Oh, and +1 on the Adv Rider tip. It's under regional forums, then Alaska. They are a great, fun group of people (at least on-line -- I haven't hooked up on any trips with anyone yet).
I lived in Fbx years ago in the mid-50's. Hasn't changed a lot except for a better road system. There's lots of great riding up there, including the Denali Hwy, Steese Hwy to the Yukon River, and of course, the Dalton Hwy to Prudhoe Bay.

I live in Wasilla now, and I need to research good riding here, as we moved to Idaho 10 years ago, and just moved back this February. Lived in Alaska 51 years before that. Oh,and there's a small group of us that meets for coffee at the Donut King in Wasilla on Wednesdays at 9:30. We'd love to see you out here.

It looks like within the next month, I will be living in the coldest city in the U.S. It was -27 degrees F the night I got there, but warmed up as the week went on. Since it's not practical to drive to Fairbanks this time of year, I will just fly up with a few bags to get me by until spring, and then will fly back and drive up with my possessions. It's going to be a pain in the arse getting my bike up there. There is a chance I may just sell it and buy another bike next summer.

Any other members from Fairbanks? I would be interested to hear your opinions and your favorite places to ride during the short riding season.

Glad you got something in Fairbanks. You will enjoy that a lot more.

I wish I could help you out with getting you stuff up here, but there's really no easy or cheap way. If you can fit it all in a large U-Haul truck and put the bikes on one of their trailers, you could probably do the whole thing for about $5K. That way you could keep you bike and get your household things, as well as your pickup, all in one move.

My brother lives in Wasilla (he teaches middle school), so I will hopping down there on occasion. If I am around on a Wednesday, maybe I will pop into the Donut King.

I'd love for both of you guys to join us. Sometimes we move coffee to Anchorage, usually at Dino's Donuts. See a pattern developing here?

Hey, if you make it down here to south-central AK next summer and you're up for a ride somewhere, give me a shout. It'd be fun to go for a ride with a fellow Stromtrooper, especially one new to the state!

Definitely take the bike. When I lived in Anchorage, my parents lived in Tok. I spent a lot of time riding 4 wheelers around Tok and there are suprisingly more roads and trails than one would think. The DL may be better replaced by a DR for the trails, but not for the pavement as it's a long slog between towns and the wind protection of the DL will be important to increase your riding season as much as possible.

You might want to check on the cost of a container to get your stuff to AK. When I moved there I Uhauled to the port of Tacoma then cross loaded onto a regular semi trailer, including putting my vehicle in the trailer. The semi was loaded onto Tote. Then we flew. The trailer backed to a loading dock to drive my vehicle off, then driven to my front door to unload my belongings.

When I left, I sold most of my stuff (family of 4) and packed everything into a 14 foot trailer that I purchased and towed behind my crewcab. I found it much cheaper to sell most everything and re-purchase than to move stuff.

There are so many military people moving in and out of the AK that it's not too hard to buy the stuff you need used. Appliances and couches especially. They take up too much room to move and you can easily sell then, buy off craigslist.

Prices of stuff in AK is a little higher, so my might be able to buy a cargo trailer, move your stuff then sell the trailer for a profit. I just quickly did a scan of Fairbanks and Missoula Craigslists and found similar 12' cargo trailers...$3100 in Missoula New and $4350 in Fairbanks used.

Just some thoughts.

You'll definitely want to get into snowmobiling, but get a personal locator when you do!

I will do that. Thank you for the offer. I will probably head south fairly regularly, since my wife also has family in the Anchorage area.

I think a little jon boat will be on my short-list of toys to purchase. That, and I would like to get back into flying. I am a private pilot, but I have not flown in a number of years. The snowmobile may have to wait.

Spoken like someone who hasn't lived in AK through the winter...

The private plane is a must do if you've already had your license in the past. So many great places to fly into and camp or fish!!!
