Default Forum death

Would'nt this forum die a sudden death, if everyone simply comes on and searches prior posts? Maybe something is truly new in oil that deserves a new thread. Unlikely but maybe. Tires, maybe I want to start a new thread about a tire. Why should I have to post in a tire thread no one will look at? A little too much starch for sure. Of shoot I should have searched to see if this has already been brought up. Sorry!

Most regulars at least click the new posts button when checking the forum. Put a new post in the big oil thread and it will be seen as it will be a new post.

VSRI allows two oil threads.
Major Oil Thread #1 for general oil topics
Major Oil Thread #2 & the last - MC Oil vs. Auto Oil for car v. motorcycle oil

This site has been growing by leaps and bounds over the years the one oil thread and one air buffeting thread policy has been in place. There is a new buffeting thread for the 2012 DL650 because it has the first new air handling system since 2004.

The oil thread rule isn't about not being able to do new oil posts. It's about not doing new oil threads.

Not necessarily. The display of new posts is limited to 5 pages so one can often miss new posts.

BTW, what is the forum default for the Default Thread Age Cut Off? I changed mine in User CP to "Show All Threads".

Yeah, but you can use your control panel settings to display up to 40 posts per page.

That one big thread concept is pretty useless IMO
Too much info, some relevant but a lot is nonsense
That is one reason I started the stromputer wiki - to have distilled organized info
Maybe an oil page is what needed for many riders

Most oil posts are nonsense. That's the main reason to keep posts in one thread, so there aren't a bunch of nonsense threads. If you want to know about oil, read All About Motor Oil

http://www.stromtrooper.com/791985-post124.html shows 26,684 members as of 3/31/12
Today's statistics show 29,236 members. This forum is far from dying.

I'm moving this thread to the Forum forum. It's not about V-Stroms.

I think most people are looking for info, preferably organized. When they can't find it, for what ever reason, a new thread typically starts

As for forum, I think it is complete nonsense..
It is growing very nicely
I love this forum and think it has added a lot to my life and riding experience, new friends in particular

Shit Howdy, I check the new posts every time I log on and do only a little research occasionally. So I would see what new questions folks have thrown out there and am amazed at the wealth of info that pops up everyday.
I catalog every thing in the sieve I call a memory and know if I do a search in the little google box everything will be right. Tires, windshields and mirrors, Oh My!

As with most things in life, there's a balance to be looked for.
Obviously, a repressive police state does not maximize personal freedom. Somewhat less obviously, neither does anarchy. In one you are constrained by official authority, in the other, less formally but no less effectively, by the actions of others and the steps you're forced to take to protect yourself from those actions. Freedom is maximized in a system that protects individuals from the harmful actions of other, by imposing a set of restrictions on allowed behavior. Exactly how far those restrictions should go is always a topic of debate.

Forums are, in their tiny way, exactly the same. Too many rules and useful discussion is stifled, too few and those useful discussions are drowned out in the noise and chaos, or inhibited from ever happening.
Probably no one who is not a moderator would draw the line precisely where the current moderators do, but overall I think this is one of the more useful bike-specific forums on the net so they can't be doing too horrible of a job.
