I got my results from my MRI today. I've been having back issues for a few years, but my sciatica has been really bad this year. I've had it for almost 2 month now so I had an MRI a couple of weeks ago.
Well, the results are a bulging disc for my L4/L5 and bulging disc for my L5/S1. That sucks. Well at least I'll have no more Physiotherapy and Chiropractor. I will get a referral to a back specialist to see where we go from here. I really don't want surgery it I can help it. The one bonus is that riding the bike doesn't really bother me. Gotta love that upright seating position. If I has a cruiser it would be murder. If anyone has any tips or advise on the pain management, that would be good. I'm really not a drug taking kind of guy. The perks have been helpful for the sciatica though.

Welcome to the other side of the hill.
Lots of us are on meds, heart, diabetes and the like. Great Whoopy! Ride like there's no tomorrow and do your best! Personally I hate my pill regimen but what the hey. Good point on the cruisers, those things can kill you. POS! |

Have you asked your doc about Yoga?
The only thing that sucks worse than getting older is not. Good luck, Norm

Ruptured disc on L5........surgery in 1994 to repair (I was 40 yrs old). Had a GREAT Neurosurgeon here in B'ham perform the "loping".......piece of cake, no pain afterwards, went home the next day like a new man!! I was lucky, me thinks........no everyone does so well. It still flairs up when I abuse my back during the day every now and then........
I feel (felt?) your pain........

I was doing yoga right up until the flair up. I really enjoy it and I will go back to the classes in a couple of weeks. It does make a difference I think.

I had very bad sciatica from last September until May. The epidural spinal injection fixed the problem. L4/L5 arthritis. I was lucky, but it completely trashed 8 months of riding.

As much time on a heating pad laid back as you can, is the only thing that made it bearable for me. Took almost a month on oxycontin and flexeril and the heating pad to get me moving around like normal, which drove me crazy, hate taking meds myself. Oxy screwed up my speech, oddly enough, gave me the stutters.
PT was useless. About a month ago, got the epidural, and it's now wearing off, follow up next week, I expect they will try another one.

I broke a vertebrae in the thoracic area of my spine racing motocross a number of years ago, and now have mild/moderate arthritis in the lumbar region. I agree with Redbike about the core strength. It definitely helps me. A physical therapist can help determine the best exercises. Once you have a herniated disk, it tends to remain a weak area that can go out again at any time, but having a strong core really helps.

I had sciatica bad about 15 years ago. right before the medical profession started milking patients the way they do now, My orthopedic doctor looked at my x rays, pokes at my back a few minutes and handed me a booklet of exercises and stretches and circled 5 of em and had me do them once a day, within 3-4 weeks, I felt a lot better, after 6 months, I lost 75lbs and felt great,
then I got lazy and stopped the exercises, actually, I didn't really get lazy, I got bit by a lyme carrying tick, the sciatica has come back a couple times, but just a few days of the exercises & stretches and I'm good again
