Crazy story...my wife and I usually go for a swim in the ocean at least a few times per week. We had a bunch of stuff to do today so we didn't get to the beach until 7:30pm, still plenty of light left as the sun doesn't set until 8:30pm.
We got there and there was a pretty substantial sand bar, we waded out to it so I could do a little body surfing. We were floating on the back side of the sand bar catching some waves when not 10ft away comes a big triangular fin. Now I see dolphins every day and this was no dolphin. The fin had a yellowish hue and we could see about 6" of fin before it went under water. We never saw the back of the shark so I have no idea if it was a big or small shark. But I've caught plenty of sharks and I know a 2-3ft shark has a damn small fin, not much bigger than a large steelhead. So the shark just glides right past us and disappears. Of course we decide this might be a good time to exit the water. Man I tell you the hundred yards back to the beach was the longest walk I've taken in a while! The worst part was when we had to cross the 1st cut and the water went from wait deep to over my head! Now I know there are millions of sharks in the water and they probably swim by all the time, but damn it's unsettling when one swims right next to you! I've scuba dived around sharks before but having them in murky water right next to you is a whole different ball game. Just thought I'd share this story with you guys. It made for an exciting afternoon!

Egads. Ya know how sharks will sometimes do a "test bump" of some food they might want to eat instead of just striking? I was sitting on my surfboard waiting for my next wave and my foot got hit so hard it swung up into the bottom of my board. Almost took me off the thing.
Time to go........ Same thoughts...I know they're always around, but when you have a close up, unplanned encounter, it's a little unnerving. |

Don't they feed in the evening? A Russian tourist and his wife got attacked while swimming just before sunset when I lived in Virginia Beach years ago. He didn't make it, she did but was bitten also.

Yup. I do morning surf. Had friends try to talk me into a "moonlight" surf on a full moon night. Uh, no thanks. They had a good time but I wouldn't have. Call me a wuss....

There has been a few people bitten in the Grand Strand area this year. I think all were a bump and bite. We must really taste nasty thank goodness. Not sure what time these occurred.

Grew up swimming and surfing NMB to Cherry Grove to Sunset Beach, NC. There are always dolphins and sharks around. Most action I have seen personally while in the water is late afternoon to dusk and around piers. Keep your eyes open and stay away from people fishing. Knock on wood never got too close for comfort. I also dive and yes there is a big difference between the Keys, etc., and clear water around reefs and swimming with sharks than the brackish wash of the sandy Atlantic especially when the surf is up. BUT, when it comes down to it, worry more about bees, lightning, dogs and cancer lol. I personally can never stay out of the water. It's in the soul. Some either get that or they do not. Kind of like riding on two wheels.
