So yesterday I'm out on a 200 mile ride, doing an indicated 75-80 on a wide, open, two-lane country 65mph highway, when I notice a vehicle catching up at a higher rate of speed.
I generally like to keep some distance from me and the cars behind, but won't go faster than my comfort level. This guy, in his black Suburban, catches up to me and instead of passing, sits about 2-3 car lengths behind and won't pass, doing ~70mph. This seems almost typical these days, people are always in a hurry, and have no problem riding the bumper of the car in front. They are obviously more important than any other human beings in the area. This is one of my biggest concerns about riding, how to get the bozo off my rear tire... if there is room I will sometimes down shift and leave them behind, often this isn't an option. What do you guys do in this situation? Thanks |

Heavy ball bearings.

If it's on an uncrowded road and it's safe to do so, I'll pull right just enough and wave the guy to pass, just like drivers often do to motorcyclists. This has worked for me and the driver will usually pass on by. I think unless he's an a$$, he'll just see your action as a courtesy.

I wave lots for traffic around if I don't feel like being pushed.

I would pick a safe spot to pull over and signal your intentions.

Yep, pull as far over to the right as you can, wave him past, and slow way down so he really wants to pass. The best way to deal with a fool is to give them distance.

Slow down. Let him pass.
If you go faster; the tailgater will go faster. |

Stand up on the pegs for a few seconds. It freaks them out and they drop back. Works for me every time.

...amongst other little pieces of oddball hardware you have lying around.
Only kidding of course as I'm not quite that mean and don't recommend it. I know some people who do those types of things but don't ride with 'em...
