News services here in Australia are all reporting the progress of the massive hurricane Sandy heading up the Eastcoast of the US. This hurricane may already be affecting Troopers as I write. I trust that all precautions are now in place as reports here tell of a great rush on essentials especially generators.

A message of goodwill from Australia. I have no doubt that all Troopers, wherever they may be, wish you and your loved ones a happy outcome from this event. The eyes of the world are watching this unfolding storm.

Sandy is a very unusual storm. Part of its strength is due to the Gulf Stream being warmer than usual, 1° to 2°C warmer. For that much mass, that is a lot warmer. The great reduction in the arctic ice pack is causing changes in the northern North America and northern Atlantic weather, but this is probably too new to accurately quantify. The highs in the northern Atlantic are pushing Sandy on to land, and Sandy will gain strength from the cold front that is coming into it from the northwest. While Sandy will have hurricane category 1 or less max wind speed, the combination of the massive size of Sandy, the moisture content, and the forecast stalling over land will cause tremendous damage.

Here's more: hurricanes and tropical storms derive their energy from the warmth and moisture of warm oceans, and Sandy is no exception. Such tropical storms are warm-core systems, with the warmest air in their centers. In general, tropical storms are not found in regions with large horizontal changes in temperature....midlatitude or extratropical storms get their energy not from warm oceans, but rather horizontal temperature changes---generally warmer to the south, cooler to the north. It turns out that the temperature changes on our planet are concentrated in the midlatitudes...and this temperature gradient fuels nearly all of the storms we experience in the winter. Midlatitude storms tend to be cold-core, with the coolest temperatures in their center.

Sometimes a tropical storm moves northward and undergoes an amazing transformation, from a warm core tropical system to a cold-core extratropical system, and switches its energy supply from the warmth and moisture of a tropical ocean to the temperature gradients of the midlatitudes. This is called Extratropical Transition (ET) in the business.

Sandy is about to go through the transformation.

Thank you for the message of good will Saturn 5. As the time of this writing the storm has been more annoyance then anything else. There are a few gusts that were concerning but right now I would not rate this as anything worse then a typical Nor Easter winter storm for my area.

The good news is that the storm has sped up a bit, hopefully it wont linger as long as everyone expects. I think that the 3-4 days of rain and wind would have been too much for a lot of the trees in this area.

I would like to say that while I do understand the potential, I am optimistic. That could all change in a couple of hours tho.

Driving around lunch time today to the office to get my laptops so that I can work from home, there was enough leaf and debris on the road at places it looked like a couple of inches of "snow". I guess timing could not be any worse for the amount of leaves on the ground, mixed with heavy rains.

Precautions were taken, items moved off the balcony, motorcycle tucked away in the garage. Its just a sit and wait thing now.

The storm was powerful but quick. . .
The aggravating part is knowing that I will be working 7 days a week for the rest of my career putting the infrastructure back together again.
Getting a little too old for these marathon work hours, week after week after week.
