Back in November of 2008, PO-SLOKE started a game called "Strom Cachers USA/Canada. Please see this link for the original thread http://www.stromtrooper.com/north-america/33162-strom-cachers-usa-canada.html and details of how that game was played. It was a fun and successful activity that was enjoyed by many Stromtrooper members. Unfortunately back in about July of 2010 the cache went MIA. This was very disappointing to those of us who participated in a cache hand-off, and to many who simply enjoyed following the thread and watching the journey.

Good news....
The Cache Game is Back! With PO-SLOKE'S permission, I have put together a new cache box and I'm ready to put it in play right away. We have learned a few things from the previous game and the rules have been changed slightly. For lack of a better term, I will be the Cache Captain and will try my best to moderate this thread with the help of a couple of other volunteers.

FAQ

What is The Cache Box?

This is the Cache Box. For simplicity we will often refer to the cache box as "the cache" but the cache is actually not the box but rather a token placed inside the box by the last rider to acquire it. The box must always contain 3 items: (1) The cache (2) Pen (3) Note Pad (journal)

What is the cache? To start the game, I will place a small item inside the box which is called the "cache". This item is the prize or reward for the next rider who acquires the box. The cache can be anything you want to pass on to the next rider. The only rule is that it must fit neatly inside the box. Typical cache items include: pins, stickers, small state souvenirs, coins, stamps, cards, etc. Try to make the cache something personal and interesting. Be creative! It may be something about you, your city/state/province, occupation, etc.

How do I get the cache? You follow this thread and the journey of the cache. When the cache is in your proximity, you make arrangements with the current holder of the cache to meet for a cache exchange. If you want to follow the progress, you should subscribe to this thread and have an automatic email sent to you whenever there is a new post.

What do we do when we meet to exchange the cache? You should do three things (1) Take a Photo of the riders involved in the cache exchange. The typical photo is one with both riders, both bikes, and the cache box being passed by hand to the other rider. (2) Make an entry on the note pad with the following: Date of exchange - GPS coordinates and/or physical address of the exchange location - Stromtrooper screen names of both riders - Any other notes or message you wish to include into the cache journal.

I have the cache, now what do I do? (1) Remove the cache token left in the box by the previous rider to keep as your prize (2) Replace the cache with one of your own to pass to the next rider (3) Come back to this thread and post a report of your the exchange including the photo. (4) Arrange an exchange with another rider to keep the cache moving.

How much time do I have to pass the cache?
In the previous game the rule was 72 hours (3 days). We are going to extend that to 1 week. Even with that extension, we understand that depending on location and season it may take longer. All we ask is that you try to move it within a week and do your best to keep the cache moving as quickly as possible. If you are unable to arrange an exchange with another rider within that time, please let us know and we'll do what we can to help. We may decide to have you keep trying or ask you to mail the cache box to another rider. We just don't want to have the cache stalled somewhere for several weeks.

What if we can't meet at the same time? In some cases it will be allowed to "geocache" the box. Let's say that you can only ride on a Tuesday but your cache exchange partner can't ride until Saturday. You can arrange with your partner to hide the box in a safe location where only your partner will find it. You must give clear directions to the location. When you place the box, take a photo and post it here telling us what you are doing. When the partner gets the box, he/she will post a photo of the cache retrieval. The downside to this is If the other partner is unable to retrieve the box within a week, you will need to go back and retrieve it or arrange for another rider to get it. Use this provision as a last resort.

Please don't get too hung up on the "rules". Try your best to keep the cache moving, but do whatever makes sense in your particular situation. Don't hesitate to ask for assistance from us or your fellow Stromtroopers. The objective is to have an excuse to ride, meet other riders, and have a new experience.

We are very excited to get this game going again! It can be a great way for you to ride to places you otherwise wouldn't and share the experience with other V-Strom riders who share your passion for riding. I hope many of you will choose to participate and I promise you that your efforts will be rewarded in unexpected ways.

GAME ON!

I don't give a squat about no stinking details. I was actually more of a Fuggs fan Not a deadhead guy. J Garcia used to like bluegrass too. White Lightning, bad drugs you're still dead.
Hey Mr. Deadhead is now the proud possessor of the Cache box.
Nice day for 463 mile ride. Yousa!
He took the pics!

Great........2000 miles away.....We don't know how to play y'alls fancy games down here in the south anyhow. Kidding aside.....cool to see it on the move (I'll wait patiently for it to start moving this direction).

I had to take the cache out of state to make it legitimate. The whole point of it is go someplace and meet someone new and chat. Very pleasant palaver over brekky.
Me and my Guard stopped at the Patton museum at Chiriaco Summit on the way home for a bit of history and gawking at the tanks they have on display.
I got home about 3pm.

Soooo, all we have out there is
I'm in Canada....
and
...Missouri...
...that's a bit much... c'mon, anyone in ARIZONA other than me?!!??:headbang:

If not, I'm moving pretty soon (sometime near the end of April), so if no one can grab it from me before I go then I'll just bring the SoB with me!

I would love to get it to the center of the country in early spring. I would like to meet at the end of an IBA SS1000 ride. Someone to witness the end of my ride would be great. Anywhere in a 1000 mile radius of central Missouri. The first week in April would be perfect. It can go anywhere from here. We are very close to the geographic center of the U.S.

I just don't have the time (or arm strength) to ride that far right now :headbang:... I barely made it home from the last ride, although it was AWESOME to get out for a while. My shoulder has been acting up again and I have to concentrate on school and getting ready for moving back up to Washington. I posted a link HERE(Lake Havasu Gathering) to try and get the cache to someone closer to me who could really get some miles out east with it.

We'll see what happens!

Jduyap is in Flagstaff and was willing to meet me but we could not get our schedules lined up.
There is a group of Arizona riders meeting in Prescott on Sunday the 24th for lunch.
You might check that post and see if any of them would be willing to meet and hand off.
Mike

alrighty, cache is moving again! Just got back (well, got back a while ago, but just now getting on the computer) and it has been handed off to jdubyap. He said he'd be able to get it to Havasu for the meetup out there and really get this thing moving!

Had fun at the Prescott meetup, wish I could have stayed longer. Here's the pictures:

Always fun to see so many stroms in one place, hope to see the cache again once I get moved up to Washington!

Is there a map or similar showing where it has been, or routes followed?
OK OK OK !!! :biggrinjester:

I found a free map we can play with, did a little test and it seems to be working ok for everyone.

Strom Cacher Revived

keep in mind this was / is a free map, I did not sign up for anything just yet, it was in the testing stages and y'all just went crazy. I may have to do an offical registration and then fill it all in again....until then I think we shall have fun.

The prospect idea is fantastic! Not everyone trolls these forums too often (myself included), so this would sure make it easier for the 'carrier' to simply PM the nearest rider in case they don't know they are the nearest rider!! Awesome idea! :hurray:

I do like the idea of a separate map though... that could get messy on one map awfully fast.
