OK folks , there is a new game in town . The 1st Official game of " STROM CACHERS . You have all heard of Geocacheing ? Well , this game is very similar but sort of has a twist . Sort of a mix between Geocacheing and Travel Bugging .

A cache is in place and on the move as I post this thread . It is quite simple to play . It is a game that is USA/CANADA based and STROM specific . Lot's of clubs and orginizations out there so let's have our own game to boot .

How it works . There is a small blue waterproof Otter Box with a clear lid in play . Inside the the case are a few items that must remain in the box when it travels . They are to remain permenant . One is the TAG itself . It is 3/4" X 4 inches long brass TAG with a black nylon corded lanyard . Inscribed on the tag are these words .

STROM CACHERS TAG
IF FOUND 828-553-2442
11/22/2008 USA

Also in the box is a small note pad and a pen . Which of course can be replaced when need be . The intended use of the pad and pen should be obvious . Within the box is the true CACHE . How the cache comes into play is this . I started the Cache Box Tag in play today with the afore mentioned items , PLUS , I added a small token as a reward to the person now carrying the Cache . The holder of the Cache as of now is Ridge Runner . When Ridge Runner got the Cache Box Tag , he took the cache I placed in there , and before he places the Cache Box Tag next , he will then put a new Cache ( or small token ) in the Cache Box for the next rider/carrier to keep . This will allow riders to possess something of the rider who had the Cache Box Tag before him . If you have ever been invlolved in Geocacheing , you'll understand . Oh yeah folks , also post up what the Cache is that was placed in the Box for you to keep . We'd like to hear about those itmes too .

OK . There are two basic rules regarding acquiring and or placing the Cache Box which goes like this .

(1) THE PREFERED METHOD . As I did today , I put the Cache Box Tag into play , I rode for a while today , then physically handed it off to Ridge Runner in person . Ridge Runner obviously at that time became Cache Box TAG carrier and possessor .
Within the PREFERED METHOD , there are endless variables . What we hope for here is that riders will plan rides in another riders area , post it up , and hand pass the Cache Box Tag personally . Yep , creating a meet and greet situaiton .
When the Cache Box Tag is acquired by a rider , he needs to get GPS coordinates of where he got it , a photo of the Cache Box and his V-STROM and of course the rider in the photo . We want to meet and greet folks here , so give us all the scoop . If the Cache Box Tag is hand passed , a photo of both riders is best . We'd like to see the connection . Post up a trip report with details of trip , photos and anything else you Cache Box Tag . Or simply post up a planned trip in the forum here and see who all we can get lined up to pass it on to .

(2) The other , but less prefered method .... Pretty much Geocacheing is it . You'll need to hide it somewhere where the general public cannot easily find it . It will need to go somewhere where any style rider can go . Not everyone is Stromin' Nromin' and can take a Strom up the side of Mount Rushmore with lunch in his hand . You can do that along the way though of course . We want the Cache Box Tag to be easliy acquired by all who ride a STROM and want to play . Again , your bike needs to be in the photo and if all possible , we'd like to see a photo of you . NO FILE PHOTOS . The Cache Box and TAG needs to be in the photo as well . If you go scuba diving and want to pass it under water , fine , just also add a photo of your bike and or bikes at the docks or something .
If you stash the Cache Box Tag , we NEED specific info . None of this guessing game stuff on this one guys . Get exact directions to the site from major intersections within a zip code and town . Post a photo of the exact location . Pretty much spell it out .
The reason we want to eliminate the guessing game here is multifold . One , if you happen to be on your Strom in a mixed bike tour and realize you are going to go within a few miles of the Cache , we don't want you holding up your tour buds on their cruisers while digging around in the middle of the Dead Sea with a metal detector . Let's do all we can to dierct folks to it .
I suppose the biggest reason we want to spell out the Cache locations are so we can keep it moving as fast as we can , and as ' far ' as we can of course , so all can have a shot at it in time .

That's pretty much the rules and the objective all wrapped into one big roll . ONE BIG RULE THOUGH . Please don't acquire the Cache in January , knowing you have a trip planned in June and hold it in your sock drawer for six months so you can have the coolest locate of us all . Keep this thing moving . You may never know when it might come back around to you .
In fact , I think we should go ahead and impose a 72 hour hold on an acquired Cache Box Tag before you need to start moving it . If you have some amazing trip planned in 73 hours , let us all know and we can toss it up and see how everyone feels about you holding it past the 72 hours .
If you have the tag on a tour , you need to be set up to post your trip report at least every 48 hours but we prefer a daily report of the movement of the Cache Box Tag . Hec , if that seems to hard , just say so . It is all just to keep it moving .
Let's play , let's learn and let's meet and greet . Historical places , wonders of the world , natural environment ... etc... etc... etc.. is what and where we would like to see this Cache Box Tag go .

OK , one more small piece of business here before I do my post and report of the Cache Box Tag for today .

I figure we need a couple of guys to sort of moderate this a little but and help keep track of folks and things . I am looking to help with this for sure and have asked Ridge Runner to help me as well . So here in the USA it looks like the two of us .

Now , don't forget , this is a Canada and a USA based game , so we would like for our brothers from the North to pick amongst you which two guys can help this game when it comes to Canada . Just remember , we need DEDICATED STROMMERS to work on this thing . If you are planning on trading your Strom in for a Scooter in spring , you may not be the best pick .
You are Canadians . You are smart and you are tough , so pick us two meatheads so you are ready when time comes . And doesn't have to be just fellas , you ladies have plenty to offer as well .

This ought to be a good and really fun game , SO LET'S GO !!!!! , Wes..aka..PO-SLOKE

Snooze ,

I just hit the submit reply key to a long winded reply post and it went POOF and was gone . How irritating . For now , that sounds totally cool . Although I was trying to post something with a twist to it . I ain't gonna retype all that right now but will in a bit . LOL .

Good job on hanging in there , Wes

[EDIT]

Snooze ,

I got your pm . I say we look at it this way . The biggest reason we went with the Geocache/Travle bug thing is so in the event folks wanted to pass it off but weren't gonna be in the same area at the same time , they could cache it with a plan in mind until the new carrier could put it in play .
Now , considering the fact that the riding season if pretty much over for SANE people , let jsut get you to hang on to it . BUT .... let's still keep it in play while you have it . In other words , if you take it for a day or weekend ride , or even if you get so bored you ride to Wally World to pick the wife up a box of Bon Bons , let's see a ride report .
In fact , take it to Granny's for Christmas let us all meet the Kin Folk . Ifin I were you , I'd use it for a Christmas Tree ornament anytime you are not riding with it . Even if you don't ride the Strom to Granny's wear it on yer neck and let us see all the good food with the fam . Please , NO shower photos though . LOL .
If you get the jest of it , just be creative and have some fun keeping us posted with words and pics . If you run into a fellow Trooper wanting the Cache/Tag , just hook him up and post up . If you are in Flipadelhia Fla and have it with you and run into a Trooper there and didn't ride the Strom to Granny's , I guess you could ride two up for a bit and then pass it off .
A couple of things though . Just let's make sure we get photos of a Strom in the passing , and don't forget the box , the lil log book and a trinket for whoever you pass it on to . Again , geocaching is a last resort and pretty much prefered if we know another Trooper is in pursuit of it . The idea is to keep us posted on the holders status in general until it gets passed . No electric chair here for doing things a bit diff . Just be creative and have fun . Oh yeah , if you pass it on to another Strommer , let's be sure he is logged on as a member on THIS FORUM . Strom Trooper .com is the Cache/Tag's home . Prolly didn't need to say that but thought I'd mention it .

Good on ya Snooze , Wes

If someone would be so kind as to second the motion , we are ' IN Play " . PO

GPS Units

 I'm uneducated when it comes to GPS units, and I haven't found much on the site about them and what people use. Maybe those of you who are more informed could point me in the right direction on a good choice of units and mounting setups.
Thanks:D

This is view 1300 and noone wants to meet up with snooze and take the cache somewhere. Heck I thought it would be cool to see if we could get this thing out to the left coast. What gives noone ride during the winter or what?

I sort of figured it would stall out during the Holidays . I was hoping a couple of iron butt sorts might be headed left coast myself and we'd see it get into heavy play . I imagine we'll see it travel pretty good come spring time .

Snooze , you still with us Bro ?

#37 ·
Well , it's just down the mountain in Atlanta so feel free to contact Snooze and meet up with him and go get that puppy . It is sort of stalled out in Atlanta due to holiday season I would guess .

Hello there allthejerretts and welcome . Not sure whats happened to Snooze . I hope he is OK , but we haven't heard from him in a while . Maybe he will chime in soon and you guys can see what you can get going .

Snooze seems to be one for some lengthy rides so it may well be likely you guys can hook it up soon . Never the less , ride safe and have a great holiday season .

Would there be a way to edit the very first post of this thread with a current location?

#42 ·
Thanks Snooze . I had been meaning to add it to my sig line so it would remain on the surface . Wouldn't be a bad idea for the current holders of the Cacge/Tag to maybe do that as well if they wanted to . It would be a great help .

I was a bit worried about you Snooze . Hadn't seen you post in a few days . Glad all is well .

If you can get it to northern Idaho or western Montana I'll get it the rest of the way to the Pacific and maybe even down to the plethora of strommers in Oregon.

I've been looking for a good reason to get more miles under me. If I tell the wife I am riding 600 miles to pick something up from a fellow rider it makes more sense to her than when I blindly point at a map and say I'll be back in a few hours (or before dinner).

An avid Utah Stromtrooper, 2mstone, is headed on a midwinter adventure from Utah to Alabama this weekend. Here's his post showing his planned route:

http://www.stromtrooper.com/showthread.php?p=337822#post337822

I'd love to see him get it and bring it back to the Rockies. Even though it's winter, I'm pretty confident it could get to the West Coast fairly quickly if 2mstone got a hold of it. He could also pass it along to some of you along his route. I'll point him to this thread.

BTW, I just barely found this thread. Great idea! I think it should be a sticky on the General Discussion page for better visibility. Even though it's a US/Canada thing, I think there would be general interest in following the travels and pics.

Good suggestion Satch, thanks for the link!

Sooooo...... who has it now? I'll be in Dothan, Alabama over Christmas. I can meet anywhere within a few hours ride from there, but not much farther than that as my daughter has a lot of plans for me while I'm there.

Also....if this works out, if you are along my route back might want to give me a heads up so I can hand off the goods. If I understand the rules correctly, I should pass it off before I get to Southern Utah as I will be trailering my bike home from there.

...
How long will you be in Dothan, just the 25th or a couple days extra? I'd love to see this make it as far as the Rockies!

Since a couple people asked, yeah, I've had it a while now. Nobody in north Georgia spoke up, and I'd hate to hide it under some rock before people are actually looking for it. I let PO-Sloke and RidgeRunner know, and they agreed. Nothing says "fun" like a little box full of mud in the middle of nowhere.

I'll send a PM. Utah! This is great news!

Hey, if it gets anywhere near me in NW Arkansas (Eureka Springs) let me know and I will meet whomever has it. The game is afoot!

2mStone, I found a couple bbq places and a couple Waffle Houses in Columbus, depending what time of day we can get there. According to yellowpages.com, the IHOP in Columbus has 5-star customer reviews. And I thought the Georgia-Alabama state line would be Cracker Barrel country. I'll PM you through the site and TXT your cell in a day or two.

Everybody have a Merry Christmas! Be safe out there.

Columbus, Ga 12/27 for breakfast

We'll be at the Cracker Barrel in Columbus, GA around 9:30 on 12/27/08, in case anybody wants to swing by from Florida or Alabama. 1500 Bradley Park Dr, only one in town. May be bringing a few family along from Dothan and Atlanta. Got to love the holidays! :bom_balloon: :bom_antlers: :bom_party2: :bom_hair2: :bom_balloon::bom_balloon:

Best of luck to 2mstone on a return trip all the way to the Rockies. Sounds like a great ride. Totally jealous!

OK . I think I might be solmewhat Kornfused so help me out here folks . Is the Tag/Caceh about to be passed off , or has it been passed off . Poor ol' Snooze has worked so hard to get someone to get this thing rolling . 2mstone , looks like you guys are trying to hook up and get it in play . Where ya gonna take it . Rumor has it that you are planning a trip to AZ .

If it has passed from Snooze to 2mstone , what are the chances we can get pics of the two riders .

[ edit ] Ok , I am a dunce , I just now saw where it will pass 12/27 . I have been under WAY WAY WAY to much stress lately folks . You'll have to forgive me for being a little goofy . LOL

2mstone will be picking up the tag/cache/box and the plan is to pass it off to me in Northern Utah or another Stromtrooper in Southern Utah in the event there's too much snow in Northern Utah. But if somebody along 2mstone's route really wants it bad and can keep it moving, I'm all for that too. Since he's bringing it that far west, I think it would be nice to see it hit the West Coast fairly quickly.

Check this out guys . ADV-FAMILY has done a little creative thing to help us visually track the movement of the Tag/Cache . ADV-FAM sent me a pm of a google map with direct line travel of the Tag/Cache so far . I think ADV-FAM is gonna post it up in the thread for all to see . Pretty cool stuff too . For now , here is a link of the initial effort . http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=U...2513,-83.71582&spn=5.404459,11.645508&t=p&z=7

ADV-FAM , hope you don't mind me posting up the link . Just wanted folks to get a sneak peek is all . Good thing man , keep it going .

Cool beans Mr. Satch . Welcome to the game and glad you are here . I'd like to see the Tag bounce around the US and Canada quite a bit myslef . Hopefully it will do an International trip this sumer .

Maybe would could get our Canadian neighbors to start a Tag/Cache game as well , but call it Stromcachers Canada/US , instead of US/Canada . That would be pretty cool if the paths cross . LOL

All in all , folks meeting lifelong pals is what is's all about in the end .

leaving Atlanta

There was a grey and misty sky this morning as I sought fuel and supplies for the road ahead. LEOs behind me, the hypnotic straight lines of the flatland over the horizon. Leaving the northern hill country for the southern plains brought a sense of exposure and vulnerability only barely masked by the dusky mist. Sunrise, if it came at all this coal-grey day, would relieve me of even that.

I found shelter among strangers along the way. Their tongue was different but recognizable in some distant sense. Little things like the twang of "y'all" that should embrace the heart rather fell upon my ears like a handshake. Nonetheless, a greeting. Even their companion animals had foreign customs, apparently roaming free without a front porch to be seen. I kept my armor close.

Mile after mile, the morning fog became mist, became a constant spray, became a companion closer than my own cloak. Having already accepted the torrent that seemed to spring up from the road itself as a part of me, I trudged onward with a clinging grip on the heated handgrips. There was at least some comfort to be found in warm hands and a dry face. Then, out of the clouds, a shape in the sky formed itself into a beacon of hope. To be warm, to be fed, to be home.

The people there did not greet me with a softened twang of tongue or a friendly "y'all", but with open smiles and warm hearts. I was alone but among kin, sharing biscuits and hot coffee as if we had done so all our lives.

My burden lifted, one braver and stronger than I can cross the western vastlands to the fabled snowy peaks of Oot'aah. Godspeed, Tombstone. Godspeed.
