Hey Strom-ers,

As the succinctly title states, I will embark on a 3 week travel quest from Los Angeles to New York in August. I have been preparing for this for awhile, and now I am on the last leg of requirements which is the route. I would love any insight and direction (pun intended) to take my route to have me safely arrive in New York.

A little background of my trip:

Solo motorcycle trip across the domestic US.
I want this to be a camping quest and a majority of the time I will reside at national parks (open to state parks and other suggestions). Also am pondering the idea of using Tent space every few days.
South and Northwest will consume most of my time. I want to hit Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, and climb up to Montana. From there I will move laterally across the Great Plains (attempting to miss the interstates, busy roads, and high winds), and end up in New York.

I have spent an abundant amount of time researching routes but quite frankly, I am letting Google maps and some "Best roads for motorcycles" articles distinguish my destiny. Doesn't sit too well with me. So I open this to you and I am sure this is the best thing to do. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks

A route through Southern Utah would be my choice, come into Colorado from the 4-corners area. Start in Cortez, ride up the Dolores river to Telluride or shoot over to Durango and ride up through Ouray. I'm in Montrose, CO. Stop by!

Make sure to leave early in the morning to head west, it's gonna be toasty heading west out of Santa Monica!

Yes - I like this idea! I want to hit Zion and Bryce Canyon and make my way over to Colorado. What route do you think I should take to head from Utah to Colorado if I'm going to hit Zion and Bryce? Was also thinking about Arches National Park in Utah.

Southern Utah in August?...Plan on very early morning and evening rides with a long siesta during the heat of the day.

Sounds like fun~! Never taking on such an endeavor, I would think that it would be based on where you wanted to visit. From L.A. the fastest way out of course would be through Vegas, then up into Utah, if you want to go directly into Colorado, then it seems like through Colorado Junction, but if you wanted to see Yellowstone, then you would have to go up through SLC. Also is this a one-way or two-way trip~? Looking at Google Maps the shortest route will still be 267 miles per day to go back and forth. Good luck and ride safe~!

Storm:

The last we met was in Arches which I thought was too crowded and too hot but I'm a weenie when it comes to both of those things. I hope you are doing well since then. I finally made it back to Massachusetts where I started having electrical problems 40 miles from home and the bike finally died 6 miles from home (after a 6,000 mile ride) where we had to put her on a trailer. One road I took of interest was the Mt. Evan paved road outside Idaho Springs, Colorado to 14,100 feet. Denver was a parking lot with I-70 construction. I got off of I-70 and took US 36 across eastern Colorado (make sure you have a full tank of gas) with free camping in St. FRancis Kansas and Atwood Kansas. Atwood looks like the best spot (IMO). I made a straight line for home but tried to stay off the interstates as much as possible but sometimes you have to bite the bullet when you have time restraints. You have my address so stop in central Mass when you get here and take a load off for awhile.

Don't worry about Utah in August. it is not that bad.
Out of Cedar City take Hwy 14 ,12 to Torrey on the east side of town there is a camp ground Thousands Lakes RV park they have all types of camping cabins and laundry. to fit any budget. you may have to stay a day to see all the sights.
Fish lake Hwy 25 goes all the way through paved don't let your gps fool you.
24 through Capital Reef is a nice ride also.
you can go to Colorado from hear or north towards SLC.
If you head north from hear take hwy72 to 70and 10 to Huntington. this is a boring ride but in the middle on the west side of the road is the official UFO landing sight. You will need to stop in talk to the retired guy that built all the stuff. It is the nest off the map tourist sight I have ever seen.
From Huntington take hwy31 to 96 to Scofield res. and Hwy 6. From there you need to go south a few miles to Emma Park cutoff east to 191 north to Duchesne. Then north on hwy35 to Kamas.
from hear there is a few directions that can go. the Mirror Lake hwy150 or make your way to hwy 65 and 66 to Morgan. north on hwy167 then 39 and 16.
From there you will hit 89 right will take you to Wyoming and left will take you to Idaho. Both will get you to the same area.
There is a better description of the middle pare of this ride described in a post on this sight under R&B ride and your envied. you will be doing it in reverse.
If you post when you will be in Utah there are several of us that can hook up and ride with you on several parts for this route.
Send me a PM and Ill give you more information.
