charging fuse question

Here's an odd question. I have a charging connector wired across the battery and it has 7.5A inline fuse. I leave it there with the wire tucked under the seat for the year, then when I put it in storage (like now) I pull the connector out and plug in the charger.

I was checking the bike today and noticed the charger flashing red meaning it's not charging. Discovered that the fuse was burnt. My question: What would cause that fuse to be burnt? Would normal starting put too much current across it? I'm wondering how long it has been burnt. Could it have been when I took it out back in the spring?

Just seemed a little odd. Curious if the group knows what would cause this.

My best guess is the positive lead managed to contact the frame somehow.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014+ DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012+ DL650s
