Electrical Problem

Hello everyone, wondering if I could benefit from some of your experience.

I have a 2005 Vee that semi regularly develops a low battery. Checked the stator and it was giving me around 60 volts at 5000 RPM. My manual says it should be producing 75 volts minimum. So I installed another Stator. The new one is giving around 55 Volts at 5000 RPM. Carried to a real tech and he said the stator seems fine (did all the normal checks) and said that he never sees bike produce the specified amount. I called my self checking the rectifier, but may have done something wrong. It seemed ok, but I have already installed a new battery. So just ordered a new rectifier. All the wiring / connectors look fine to me.

So my question is, does your stator produce the 75 volts referenced in the manual? I think I just made a $300 mistake (but now I know how to replace the stator and have a spare).

Have you checked to make sure the magnets haven't come loose and are evenly spaced?

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

No...nothing other than a general look when replacing the stator

OK....checked the rotor and magnets. In tight and equidistant...replaced rectifier silk have problem! Went back and looked at part numbers and installed a 02 statoar. Going to put the original back in and see what happens..geeeez this stuff is aggravating

Let's back up a bit. What is your DC voltage at the battery in the following states?

Resting voltage (key off). With a new charged battery, should be 12.8V. If you have a charger hooked up, disconnect it an hour or so before testing so you don't get a false reading.

Voltage with key on, bike not running? How fast is the voltage dropping?

Voltage at idle?

At approximately what RPM does it begin charging above battery voltage?

Voltage at 2,000 rpm?

Voltage at 5,000 rpm?

Also, check the connectors to the stator, the regulator/rectifier, and the main fuse VERY carefully for signs of overheating or corrosion -- for four decades, Suzukis have suffered from undersized crappy connectors.

You may find The Stator Papers helpful -- these documents were developed for vintage Suzukis, but as it happens the V-Stroms use the exact same type of charging system.

(Also, are you maybe looking to sell off that 2002 stator cheep...?)

In the interest of full disclosure, I haven't had a charging problem...yet.

An '02 stator is rated 350watts, your '05 needs the 400watt stator. My 350watt stator puts out 76 v. AC across
any 2 of the 3 leads at 5000rpm. Did you probe for a ground leak (continuity) from each of the 3 leads to a
stator mounting point?

Does the battery hold it's charge for 24hrs? 12.6+ v. when new, 12.3+ v. as time goes by.

Do volt meter probes on the battery cables show 13.x volts at idle (1100rpm-1300rpm)? My K2 idles 1250rpm, got
13.3 v. before mosfet r/r install, 14.5 v. now.

Do you get 14.x volts on the cables at 5000rpm? My K2 showed 14.4 before mosfet r/r install, 14.5 now.

Are you running extra lights, heated gear etc.? A volt meter would tell if you go below charging voltage while riding.
