Locking Shad case to bike

I am looking for a top case for my 2015 V-Strom 650 ABS. I am torn between the Givi E340 and the Shad SH37 (or SH40). These are all about the size I think will look OK on the bike and still carry what I need (helmet and gloves when stopped, basic commuting otherwise).

Anyway, the big advantage I keep reading about the Shad cases is that you don't need to use the key to open it. You can leave the box unlocked and still latch it. My question is, if I leave the case like this, can the case be removed from the bike? If my case is empty and unlocked and I leave the bike for a while, can anyone come up and remove the case and take it?

My BMW R1200RT lets me leave the case unlocked but is is still locked to the bike, but it has a three position lock. If I leave it unlocked, nobody can remove it from the bike and take it. I am hoping this is how the Shad cases work as well.

The Shad top cases aren't locked to the bike unless the handle is locked w/ the key. I have the SH45 top box on my 2015 650 and like it ok.

The only thing I don't like about it is the lid retaining straps are flexible plastic and tend to pull the lid closed in colder weather.

Hmm, so I either have to use the key all the time with a Givi, or worry about leaving the case unlocked and having it stolen off the bike with a Shad. Bummer, but kind of what I expected. I guess the BMW cases are in another league. I wonder who makes them and if I can get cases like that for the V-Strom...

I found the SH45 at a local scooter store. They let me take it out to the parking lot and place it on the bike. Didn't look too bad, but I just don't think I want something that big on the back of my bike. That's why I am looking at the Shad SH37 or Givi E340. Kind of leaning towards the Givi in case I decide to eventually get the E22 side cases, so that hopefully (I'm not sure about this) I could use the same key on all three cases.

I think a topcase getting stolen is pretty unlikely, locking or otherwise. I've been parking my bike outside for years now, and nobody has ever messed with it. I have an SH-49, and I like it a lot.

Also, while it might be possible to remove it without the key, at least with mine the key is supposed to be used to take it off. There's a special key position for it, and otherwise I think you risk breaking something. That alone might be a good enough deterrent to the odd topcase bandit.

Your SH49 had the three-position lock. It's a different mechanism than the smaller cases that only have a two-position lock.

Looking at Shad's instructions (that are not very good, but cover 5 languages in 2 pages!), it isn't very clear, but I believe if left unlocked, the case can be removed without the key. Here are the pertinent instructions for the SH37:

1- To open the SH37 TOP CASE, insert the key in the vertical position. Operate the
locking mechanism as shown in Fig. 3. Turning the key in a clockwise direction will
lock the SH37 so that it can neither be opened nor detached from the adaptor. The
key can be removed in either the locked or unlocked position.
2- To remove the SH37 TOP CASE, insert the key in the vertical position, hold the
case by the handle, operate the lower part of the opening mechanism and lift up
gently until the anchorage comes out of the case. Then pull to remove the upper
tongue from the adaptor groove (Fig.4).

How often will you remove the box ?

I self tapping screw or a bolt and wing nut put through the bottom of the box into the mounting plate will secure your box to the bike without needing to use the lock.

This may not be relevant but... I ave a SH50 and there are three positions

1. unlocked (lid opens)
2. locked (nothing opens)
3. unlocked (case is removable)

That said, I believe if I wanted to do so, I could remove the case in the (1. unlocked) position. At that point, you probably could not attach it again to another mounting plate.
