I use torque wrenches all over my bikes, including on the oil plug.

When I stripped the plug on my TL, I used a helicoil set with a tapered tap that guides itself into the hole...
I'm having trouble reconciling these two statements.

Fair enough - rephrase: Since stripping my oil plug, I use torque wrenches all over my bikes.

Fair enough. I find that using the reverse adapters also helps. For example, your spark plug socket has a half inch drive. But if you use the reverse adapters with your shorter 1/4 inch ratchet, the shorter handle makes it more difficult to get carried away.

I have used the lbs/inch wrench on BMW pivot bolts for preloading paralever bearings, because it was really difficult to guess how much 6 lbs/ft actually is in that case.
