I signed up for this board on my iPhone on the side of hwy 99 just north of Squamish BC. it's 12:43. Been here for an hour.

I was riding to Whistler, and suddenly it felt like it slipped out of gear. I ratcheted around a bit, nothing. Stopped, and using my iPhone, noticed it puking oil. Shut down the engine right away.

Called BCAA, and they sent a boom truck. No go, so now I'm waiting for a flat deck from Whistler.

Its almost impossible to see with the iPhone where it is leaking from.

Any night owls out there have an idea?

I bought a chain and sprockets from Blair Layton, and had a shop in Whistler change it. The shop cut the chain I provided too short. So they used a lesser quality one off the shelf. And ordered a replacement.

Tomorrow, they were going to put on the proper chain. But it looks like the substitute just didn't make it that far.

So when the chain flew off, it mud have damaged something important.

So, it's a DL1000, no warranty, should I expect them to fix whatever damage the broken chain caused?

Well sounds like its expensive, chain off and oil coming out .....

How long ago did they fit the chain?

I am awake in Squamish at 1:45 A.M. Anything I can do to help ??

Thanks for the offer water. The bike is a t revolutions in Whistler, and I'm laying in bed now. Watch out for the oil on 99 just north of Depot tomorrow.

There is certainly a good crack in the case. Could have been much worse though. Could have fouled up the back tire, on that oil.

They put the chain on about 3 weeks ago. Has about 1800 km on it.

Good to hear you got straightened away for the night. Keep us informed how things shake out.

Sounds like someone owes you a bike...
...or a replacement engine.

Photos would be helpful, it could be simple. But by the sounds of it, I doubt it, unfortunately.
You'll probably need a lawyer.

Is there a consumer protection agency in B.C. that regulates motor vehicle repair shops? That would be your first call. It depends on B.C. law, but I'd hope the shop would make you whole...replacement engine or whatever it takes. B.C. small claims court is good up to $25,000, but first you need to (1) find out if the shop is responsible for damages consequential to their shoddy work or parts under B.C. law, and (2) if you can prove that their actions were responsible.

Did they use a clip-type master link? If, on their own, they substituted a clip type link for the riveted link they took out, they are clearly at fault for that.

I called ICBC, and it is covered by my comprehensive coverage.

If a tire blows, the tire is not covered, but damage caused by the tire is covered. Same with a chain.

So the shop is going to cover my $500 deductible, and ICBC will cover the rest.

The chain stretched much more than the shop expected. That's what caused it to fly off the sprocket. Not sure what happened after that.

But my trip to Seattle for tomorrow night is cancelled.

The Strom is my primary vehicle in the summer.
