Do you mean the Stebel Nautilus? See http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,3541.0.html for wiring.

As for mounting, I used a pipe grounding clamp from Home Depot, and a piece of 1-1/2" wide and 1/8" thick aluminum angle with one side trimmed to about 1/2". The clamp is mounted on the front fairing frame. The clamp and the horn are bolted to the aluminum angle.

Beautiful timing. I just became the proud new owner of a Nautilus and was about to go digging for mounting photos. Thanks greywolf.

I used stainless steel wire straps and mounted mine up in the fairing behind the left headlight. Works great!

Just make sure you ground it to the battery and not the frame. If you grounf it to the frame, plan on it not working after a couple weeks.

As little time is spent with the horn activated, a frame ground probably won't cause any problems. I just prefer not passing any current through the aluminum/steel frame interfaces and take a chance with bimetallic galvanic corrosion. It isn't that much more work to run ground wires to the battery or install a grounding block with a battery connection. I think most horn installations are done on the left. I used to have a grounding block there that has since been replaced by a fuse block so I put mine on the right.

I grounded mine to the frame and it stopped working after 2 weeks. I moved the ground to the battery and haven't had any problems since.

YMMV

Default Air Horn is in

We got the horn installed this weekend. My buddy designed a one-piece bracket that mounts on the left side with two screws and a small hardware part that I will have to identify on a future log-in. The beauty part is the actual connection to the horn, using a small hard donut of rubber similar to an engine mount sandwiched by the horn mount, bolt and washers. Very stout, but able to vibrate and give a bit without working loose.
Dang this thing is loud. My install has the horn outlet pointing straight out the front air grill for full effect. I will try to post some pictures.
PS I ran the black ground lead all the way back to the battery as you suggested, thanks.

Default Left side air horn installation

I just finished installing my Stebel Air Horn, but inside the left fairing, unlike most right side installations posted. I mounted horn to fairing frame with a piece of 1" x 1/8" aluminum flatstock, shaped to fit and attached with SST hardware. I wanted to keep right side of fairing clear in order to provide easy access to coolant surge tank and resorvoir. I fabricated a new wiring harness with sheathing and heat shrink terminal fittings. I did ground the horn with a lead to the frame under the clutch hose support clip M8 cap screw on left side.

I removed OEM horn, pulled connector and lead over to left side of radiator for connection to new harness. Relay was installed between (2) existing relays behind battery. Horn compressor intake was protected with supplied baffle and small length of rubber hose. Entire horn is tilted slightly down on rear end to allow for intake drainage. Clearance between fork and horn bracket is good and end of horn is about 1/2" foward of gas tank when tank is reinstalled.
I thank all previous posters on this project as their experience was invaluable!

I decided to mount the horn on the left side. I cut a 1" wide (barely clears the weld seam), 3/16" thick stainless steel bar, rounded off the ends, drilled 3 6.5mm diameter holes (the 2 holes at the end are 223mm apart) and painted it black. I had to replace the original metric screws (30mm long) with longer ones (45mm), added a spring lock washer and loctited the screws.
Pulled the wires from the original horn (stock horn remained in place), extended the wires to reach under the seat where I mounted the relay to protect it from the elements. Also, stringed 2 wires from the horn to the relay. Don't forget the weatherproof connectors and weatherproof electrical tape.
It is not really visible in the pictures, but the horn is indeed in an upright position.
I could not find black zipties in the local Home Depot so I opted for the white one. Still better than the green blue or yellow that I bought together with the white ones in a kit.
