Aux light mounts

I was trying to figure out where to mount my LED aux lights. I wanted them down low to make me more conspicuous and still be protected in the event of a lay down. I previously had them mounted to the fender mounting bolts but the fender cracked completely around the bolt. I think it was because I removed the shouldered bolt and installed the light mounting bracket with a hex head bolt, putting too much pressure on the plastic. The lights also took a pounding whenever Miss Vstrom wanted to lay down on her side.

I talked with Rick of Richland Rick about a modified fork brace that extended out enough to mount the lights. He liked the idea but was too busy to fab something up for me right away so I came up with this. I fabricated it out of some hardware store steel and mounted them using the existing holes in the brace. I'm real happy with the design and placement of the lights.

Nice job on the bracket - that's a good idea. How exactly does it mount to the brace?

Edit: Nevermind - I think I can see 2 small bolts that go through the middle of the 2 brace pieces. It was just a little hard to see since the pictures were showing sideways in my browser.

I like what you did with that fork brace mount. Very clean design. I was thinking about fabricating a light mount for the same kind of brace even before I saw this thread. Like you, I saw the pre-existing holes and thought it would make a good place to attach something. I keep looking at the RF series of fog lights from PIAA and wondering how I could mount a single RF6 up front and low. They are lightbar shaped and the 2012+ Wees don't seem to have any good commercial mounts that would accept a single rectangular light. I thought maybe a fork brace mount would let me put one very low over the front fender.

Have you checked to make sure that at full compression you're not going to hit the mount? I thought about that while I was riding home today, and while braking hard it comes pretty close from what I could see.
It occurred to me that a light mounted over the front fender might have clearance issues at full fork compression. Maybe not, if it's low enough, but I've never seen a picture of a Wee with the forks fully compressed to the stops so it is definitely a concern until I'm able to determine what the clearance is. I would assume that the RF lights are less than 3 inches tall, but PIAA doesn't list the dimensions of the housings other than to say that they come in either 6", 10" or 18" widths.

If anyone has a full compression photo for 2012+, I'd love to see you post it!
