Default Fixing a Pelican Case: Pelican Goes Good On Warranty

This past spring, I threw together a "quick and dirty" tankbag, comprised of a Pelican 1200 case and leftover parts to my Cortech tankbag. (Here is the link to that post: HERE .)

Now that I have traveled on several trips with this "concoction", I am very pleased with what I threw together. There are no "mechanical parts" that could fail, or that I have to fumble with to get at the gas tank cap.

I can just "swipe" the bag to the right.....

....or, swipe the bag to the left.

It's not going anywhere!!! I never have to worry about anything inside of it; it's waterproof. I just chuck my personal belongings, (wallet, cellphone, passport, change), some granola bars, reading glasses, small journal, flashlight, pens, earplugs...... and away I go. On my last trip up to Saguenay Fjord, I turned the case into a little daypack and slung it over my shoulder and carried it on my climb up Cap-Trinité.

At the summit, this is what I had inside. There is even a enough room to carry a small tripod! (If you look closely, you can see the broken locking hasp.)

About six weeks ago, I believe it was when I was on my Memorial Day Trip, one of the lid hasps broke. I kept forgetting about it; I only use my tankbag when I am on trips and not during my daily commutes and "off" weekends. Every time that I would pick up the tankbag to hook it into its "tether", I would remind myself, "Oh yeah, I need to contact Pelican to see if they will go good on this."

About three weeks ago, I did contact them. They replied with an e-mail form that I needed to fill out and send back to them. When I did, I also included a photo of the broken hasp. I received a "thank you" reply for the information and the photo.

About 10 days later, I received a package in my PO Box. It contained two new hasps, to hinge pins for the hasps, and a set of directions.

The directions said that I needed a, "such-and-such sized drift", I threw the directions away........

I picked up a rat-tail file and tapped out the hasp, hinge pin.

The hasp, hinge pin has "thread-like" serrations on one end. The are intended to be "barbs" for the pin to "hook into" the plastic that surrounds the pin race.

(Sorry about the blurry photographs. My camera is struggling on its last legs).

I used a pair of needle-nose pliers to pull the pin the rest of the way out.

I slide a new hasp in place and since I already had a usable pin in the pliers, I pushed the original pin back into place and tapped it home with a hammer.

Without taking photos, I think I could have done the whole job in 27 seconds.

I didn't pay for, nor was I charged anything for the two new hasps and hasp pins. Pelican honors their lifetime warranty.

B.

I'll see your 23 and raise it to 21.

( I was very disappointed that there was no welding involved....... But, wait until you see what I have planned for the extra Pelican 1550 case I have leftover from not using it as a sidecase. Stay tuned.......)
