Gel seats sure can get hot. Oddly enough the stock 'Vee' seat has been perfect for me. It seems that seats are completely ass-specific...

I would just bite the bullet and get the best. Which is the Russell All Day seat. Exceptionally well constructed and way comfortable for hours on end. Given the price of other custom seats, they are pretty reasonable. Not worth buying a substitute and saving a few bucks IMO.

I have a Rick Mayer too.....It's really allowed me to ride much longer before wanting to stop and stretch my legs and walk about a bit (I don't know how people ride for hour on end without going stir crazy!). Much more comfortable and supportive than the stock seat. I believe Rick has a very lucrative sale offer going this month....

I'm in the same boat with respect to needing a new seat. I've ridden my Vee from Oklahoma City, to San Antonio, to home in the Pacific northwest, to include a tour of the Grand Canyon. I noticed this year though that the seat was really bothering me. I just took the bike to a friend's in Mesa, AZ and after a two day ride decided that the stock seat had to go. I don't know if it is the seat aging or me.
Several years ago I stopped by the Russel "factory" to get the tour and then stopped by Rick Mayer's place. He showed me how he builds his seats, the type of foam he uses etc. I had one of Rick's on a BMW GS and it was great so he is a top choice to do my Vee saddle. With that said, Rich's is just up the road from me and he builds a beautiful seat with excellent customer satisfaction. Rich's Custom Seats I spoke to Rich a couple of years ago when I visited his shop and he said to me "You really need to see what I do with a VStrom seat" so I'll definitely check him out before making a decision. I'll be heading back to AZ for a week in Jan so will have made a decision by then. I'll either ship it to Rick or bring it home to have Rich do it. I'll post some pics when I get the seat back. It may come down to price since they are both great seat builders. |

2TT: I've got an extra Sargent you can try if you're riding an '04-'11. Not sure where you're located, just know I've seen you post in OR so figger you must be close to C-bus. Lemeno.

For those who've owned Sargents, what's your take on them?
I'm considering a new seat for my Vee. I've got a Sargent on my KLR and it's pretty good. I'm not sure it's as good as full blown custom built seat though. The one thing I want is a completely "new" seat, I don't want to cut up my stock seat. I have no beefs with a custom seat made on a clean used OEM seat pan. The other thing that's critcal for me is passenger comfort, it needs to be as good as the rider comfort. Quite a few of the seats appear pretty good for the rider but just average looking for the passenger. Any comments regarding passenger comfort on any of these? I really don't want a seat that looks like an arm chair though, that's my biggest turn off to the Russell (and a few other) seats. I like the look of the Rich's seat in his gallery.
