Strommers,
Last night along I-99 here in Pennsylvania I hit a large doe broadside. Luckily, I was driving a large van, not my wee-strom. The deer literally exploded and the front end damage was pretty severe. It's the first day of deer hunting season in this state, and the poor critters are confused and have a penchant for open roads. Trust me, these animals appear out of nowhere. During hunting season, to ride safely is to ride during daylight. Ken

We're about halfway through a 9-day season here.
Every time I hear my neighbor's 30-06, I relish the though of one less antlered forest rat to ruin my riding day.

I can definitely echo this warning... I almost hit a doe a month ago during my morning commute – in a place where I’ve never seen deer before. It was about 30 minutes before sunrise and I was doing 55 mph. I missed her by about 4 feet – a fraction of a second at that speed. Practicing emergency braking paid off! Thank the Lord I didn’t have it leaned over in a curve…
On a sad note - I just read in this morning’s paper about a 65-year-old man killed by a deer in Perquimans County, NC - riding his 2012 Harley. The deer actually ran into his left side – knocking him off the road. That happened at 10:00 AM, too... so we need to be careful during daylight hours as well – especially here in Northeast NC where a lot of deer hunters use dogs to get deer moving. This bow hunter has a hard time calling that hunting – but it’s a common practice here… |

If it is any consolation to you I personally removed one 10 pointer and 2 big does from the Kentucky countryside the past 2 weeks. With 150 grain projectiles and not my vehicle.
I quit riding after dark between Nov 1 and December 15 or so. In my area, the deer are everywhere at night, even subdivisions are not safe. As many deer as I have shot over the years, I am quite certain I am on the deer top ten FBI "most wanted" list for removal from the roadways.

I think our season is about done. There were hunters all over the mountains. I don't know how successful they were but I saw a doe in middle of the road coming back down the mountain on Sunday. Kill Them All, dang forest rats.

Fortunately, I don't commute in the mountains anymore. I did clobber / get clobbered a big doe my last year of commuting in the Mts in my little Subaru justy. Since then, I don't ride my bike in deer territory at deer time.
Our deer herd here is WAY too big : the deer hunt needs to be expanded a Lot since their natural predators have declined from man's influence. I'm sure the hunters wouldn't mind. Doug |
