meps voted in legislation making mechanical testing compulsory every year, ABS mandatoryon new bikes over 125cc from next year (i think), other stuff too. That will make biking more expensive.

What does "meps" mean?

We had annual vehicle inspections here in FL from way back when till the late 80's, then they stopped. It was pretty basic; lights, brakes, wipers, steering. You had to have a pretty ratty car to fail (I failed many times) and if you did fail, you'd get a 30-day "pass" to fix it. I had an old Spitfire the inspectors hated, so every month I'd go by and get another pass till they got sick of seeing me.

It comes in force in 2016. It mostly concerns emission standards and the inclusion of anti-lock brakes on bikes over 125cc.

If every bike has ABS then you would think that economies of scale and competition will make it cheaper. I suspect there won't be any real increase in pricing, at least in the long run, related to it being standard.

A hole lot of legislated crap has added to car prices but (at least in Canada) car prices here are the same or less than they were 10 years ago in spite of having tons more standard equipment.

Also, my 2012 DL650 (which has ABS standard) cost me LESS than my 2006 DL650 did when I bought in in the summer of 2006 (when they were blowing bikes out the door.) And of course the 2006 has no ABS.
