Are there any GPS units out there that can import 'google maps' routes?
Thinking that might be a good Christmas present. |

The problem with importing routes from Google maps is with Google, not the GPS itself. However, there is a free program called Tyre that utilizes Google maps to create routes that can then be downloaded to a GPS (Garmin, TomTom, and others).
You can download the program here TyreToTravel - find, create and share routes I have used it for years and find it very easy to use. Hope this helps. Rod |

Another great option os the Harley Ride Planner, like Google Maps, and
can send custom routes direct to gps unit, excellent and free, winning! Ride Planner | Harley-Davidson USA |

Whatever format you get your routes into, you prolly need GPS Babel format convertor to get them into your GPS.

Once you create a route, you can send it directly to the GPS or save it to your computer. Works very seamlessly. Rod |

Garmin base camp does as well
You must get one that imports routes You missed HD rider when it was good However they all suck as they Take you from waypoint to waypoint using their algorithm not your computer map. They will usually take you on 50 miles of pavement to avoid 5 miles of dirt. If something happens you can't go back, reactivating the route takes you to the beginning I am taking the tact to just use addresses on roads I want to ride or mini routes that you can activate separately

Are the maps & functions of "motorcycle specific" GPS units (Zumo, etc..) the same as the auto units? Or do they use different maps or use the maps differently than the auto units?

I can't speak for all units but I do know that .gpx files created in Tyre can be read by Garmin 765, 855, and Zumo 550.
