You want to connect the voltmeter to a switched circuit so it isn't drawing power from the battery all the time. The heated grip connectors buried atop the radiator are one good choice. Be sure your 12v receptacle has a fuse in the positive wire, and run both positive and negative wires to the battery. Go ahead and take the tank off...it's good practice (and easier when it is low on gas).
