New suit? How long do these things last?

For winter riding. My Teknic Stinger jacket has been good and has never leaked (Hydro Guard) even in storms but it is about five years old. It is my first textile jacket, I always used leather before this one. Is five years stretching it for a jacket or do I have a few more years left? My Tourmaster pants also about five years old is holding up but leaks at the crotch in heavy rain, I think it might be blow by though because my belly gets wet also.

I hit my Tent , boots , and leather with a good waterproofing (Camping section @ Academy) every season. That has worked like a charm for years. Probably would freshen up your gear too. No more swamp crotch.

time isn't a factor as much as miles, hanging in a closet does not wear a jacket out like

#1 ultraviolet light
#2 washing
#3 riding in the elements

its easy to wear a jacket out in 5 years if you ride 30k/year but @ 4000 miles a year, the same jacket will last 20 years if it still fits and you keep it hung in a closet when not in use

Yep.

I ride to work every day, in addition to a lot of other riding for fun, so I wear stuff out quickly -- lots of on and off, lots of UV.

Dual-sporting will also wear out gear very quickly -- even if you manage to stay on the bike (no guarantees...), you get a lot dirtier, and dirt and dust wear and abrade fabrics very quickly.

I generally need to pick up a new mesh jacket every spring and replace my primary waterproof jacket every two or three years. Pants are variable -- I'm hoping to get five waterproof years out of my new pair of Dariens from Aero$tich, but given the wear I'm already seeing after six months, I don't have high hopes. :furious:

I also rotate gear when commuting -- if it's sort of cold and not raining too heavily, I'll wear my second-heaviest jacket to work, a battered Tourmaster Transition 3. If it's really miserable, I'll bust out the Firstgear Kilimanjaro. I have an older Kilimanjaro that's no longer very waterproof I sometimes pull out when it's cold and dry.

Helmets wear out as well -- I've found that they last a lot longer and smell a LOT better if you rotate between two or three helmets, especially when it's hot.
