Arrow I Would Like To Donate My Motorcycle To Two Charities, (Story and Pics)

Hello,

It has been awhile since I have visited this forum. The main reason for my absence has been: My 2007 DL-650, and my riding, is no longer relevant and enlightening to the, V-Strom / Stromtrooper community.

Let me explain my thoughts more clearly. With the advent of the new, 2012 DL-650 V-Strom, there are now a boatload of “new faces” and Avatar Names woven throughout the threads, in all sections of this forum. This is a fine testimony to Suzuki’s enduring V-Strom product, and also to the fine nature of this forum; which translates to, the fine individuals that support and contribute to this forum.

However, the version of the 2007 Suzuki V-Strom, that I ride, has been modified so heavily by me that, it has no relevance to the old, pre-2012, models, and it obviously is not even close to the pedigree of what the new DL-650 is, and represents! I do not have anything more to offer here on this forum, other then to add my annoying quips to threads, and to blatantly hijack work created by other individuals; again, in an annoying fashion to other readers! It is time for me to move on, and I have made the decision to do so.

Since 2004, when I purchased my very first motorcycle, (2003 Kawasaki ZZR-1200. I taught myself how to ride on this bike!), to my purchase of a new 2006 Kawasaki Concours, to the subsequent purchase of a new 2007 Suzuki DL-650 V-Strom, I have ridden just about 140,000 miles over the past eight years. A total of 110,000 miles has been racked up on my Strom alone.

A couple of weeks ago, I laid down some high mileage days to ride from, Mount Desert Island, Maine, to Crossville, Tennessee. I did this so that I could attend the, Ninth Annual American Sonex Association Gathering. (If you would like to look at the photographs from that trip, follow this link: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...1&l=1841417e41 ). The bike ran flawlessly as usual. But, it is my last trip on this bike. If I continue to ride next season, I will be doing so on another motorcycle. I want the new challenge of learning about another bike. I want to see what I can do with another machine. (My choices of which motorcycle are for another topic, at another time.)

So, this brings me to the question of, “What do I do with my old V-Strom?” Because of the amount of miles on it, and because of all of the modifications I have done to it, the motorcycle essentially has no value. I can’t trade it in at a dealership, nor would I be able to trade someone “even” for something else; “Of equal value”. (I already own a Kitchenaid Mixer. I don’t need another.).

For some of the new forum members, who are not familiar with my version of a V-Strom, here are two photographs that I shot, during a trip, this summer.

Of course, there is the venerable “Moncton Mud Puddle” shot as well, (2009 season), with the accompanying video to put things into context.

Many of you know that I am involved with two charities. One charity was founded nearly 25 years ago by my dear friends, Rob and Jan Marshall. It is called, Alström Syndrome International. Alström Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that ends up claiming its victims at a fairly early age. If you would like to read more about ASI, please follow this link: Alström Syndrome International | Supporting those affected by Alström Syndrome I would also like to add that, the ONLY reason I have been able to ride all of the miles that I have ridden on my Strom is because of, Rob and Jan. They kindly and graciously watch my black lab dog, "Reuben", while I am gone. Some people think that I wouldn't be "Black Lab" without Reuben in my life. That may be partly true. I can tell you that, I would not be able to be "Black Lab" here on this forum, if it weren't for Rob and Jan giving me the freedom to roam.

The other charity that I am involved with is, Loki Clan Wolf Refuge. Loki is a destination for wolfdogs to be able to live out their lives in a healthy and safe environment. To learn more about Loki Clan Wolf Refuge, you can follow this link to their website: LokiClan | Welcome. They also have a Facebook page as well: https://www.facebook.com/lokiclanwolf

Here is a recent Fox News report, (Portland, Maine), that reveals what Loki does, and what it is like.

If you would like to see “Hot Off The Press” photos of Loki, I was there yesterday participating in a “Fence Party”, (October 27, 2012). Here is a link to that photo album: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...1&l=36dfee04ee

Alright, where am I going with all of this? I mentioned above that, my motorcycle has no value. However, there may be some value in its history. How much, I really don’t know. And, would anyone ever be interested in buying that history? That, I don’t know either.

What I want to do with my motorcycle is to raffle it off. My thoughts have been this: Sell 200 tickets, at a cost of $5 each. A drawing would be conducted on December 31, 2012, and someone would win my bike. The money, from the sale of the 200 tickets, ($1,000), would be split equally between Alström Syndrome International, and Loki Clan Wolf Refuge. I receive none. What my motorcycle, and the people of this forum, have already given me is, priceless. I need no more from it.

The above is what I would like to do…….

But, executing it is not that simple.

Because of the bike’s connection, and my connection to this forum, Stromtrooper is the place to “advertise” the raffle for my bike. Most likely, the owners of the forum won’t allow that to happen. More importantly though, EVERY state has their own rules and regulations regarding raffles. In some states, raffles are illegal. How do you work through that issue with forum members living in every state in our country? And, then there are the forum members that hail from different countries. This opens another can of worms!

I don’t know how to proceed from here. If knowledgeable individuals have ideas, or a solution, to my conundrum, I hope that they will come forth, so that a little help can end up in the hands of some children, and in the mouths of some dogs that I care very much about.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Barry Buchanan
“Black Lab”

PS: There are two boxfuls of spare parts, a Suzuki Service Manual, some custom made tools, and a pile of tires that go along with my bike.

Used, but with good tread left of them!

Why don't you sell your bike and give the proceeds to your non-profits? Seems you'd make more money that way and easier than a raffle. I bet people here or on other forums could appreciate Frankenbike... I heard it is very easy to service

Wow what a pile of tires!! I wish I could help you with the raffle issue but that's beyond me. If you figure out how I'll buy a ticket to help a wolf, seems fair since one of my dogs is a Samoyed and a direct wolf decendent.

And I'd suggest a DR650, I think one of your earlier posts mentioned that. There are bolt on 17 inch rims off a SV650 for those that drop the height and while they aren't as fast as the DL they handle fantastic and stick to the road like glue.

How about an auction? Bids start at $500 ? You could even put it on Ebay and then inform everyone here about it. I suspect a Stromtrooper would out-bid anyone who is not familiar with your bike and it's history.

Failing that, put it in the for sale section of this site for stromtroopers to make offers on, with a cut off date. Highest offer wins.

I would prefer that the cost of the bike, (read as, "donations to Alström and Loki"), is spread over a group of people, instead of just one person buying the bike. $5 from 200 people is easier money to raise than, $1,000 from one person. More people will get to participate in these two causes, instead of one.

Really hate to see you go but understand and definitely wish you all the best with your new adventures! I hope you will leave up your how to's on your web site. I don't know if I could have changed my steering stem bearings without ya!
I'll keep an eye out for the raffle, I'd love to contribute to your charities.
Enjoy your flying and be safe out there!

How about the 'raffle' revolve around making donations to these two charities? You ask that we note Vstrom in the notes section when making a donation to either charity. Set a deadline, contact them both for lists of those who donated, and yeah... create a list, tape it to the bottom of a box, and throw in the tire valve cap and see where it lands. Mount a camera above for youtube drama. Include many takes for many lulz

I think it would be very cool if you could somehow get it to a V-Strom gathering and have it on display with some of the history, photos, etc. and then raffle it off there. Logistically it presents some challenges and is probably not feasible, but I think it would be a a fun thing for those in attendance.
