Matte Black Helmet

I have a Matte Black Helmet that I would like to make more visible during the day and at night.. Has anyone done something like this? What would you suggest?

Lots of great decal designs available on E-bay. Many allow your selection of color or reflective surface.

SOLAS tape ?

Probably cannot do much to increase daytime visibility, but for darkness, I'd recommend SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) tape. You'll recognize this by the name (fine print) on the reflective surface, and its small hexagonal pattern. This stuff REALLY lights up. You may try calling local marinas, or eBay to buy small amounts. Whether you decide on stripes, or big rectangles, etc., you will be seen.

If you want to stay black, there is black reflective tape by 3M, but it's pale compared to the SOLAS stuff.

BTW, I put some on the undersides of my saddlebags & swing arm, just in case my horse takes a nap on a rainy unlit road some evening. Won't make it any lighter to get upright, but maybe oncoming traffic will wonder, "What the Heck is THAT?" And stop?

Being of a certain age, I grew up on Westerns, so I've always worn a white hat.

You can make your helmet much more visible with some fine sandpaper, masking tape, and rattle-can paint of your choice. White is great; hi-viz yellow/green is more visible with some backgrounds and less visible than white with others. Don't get paint into the EPS liner through the'll stink for a long time.

The SOLAS retro reflective tape is brightest but at a narrow reflective angle. It reflects back mainly straight at the light hitting it. DOT-C2 red & white tape that you see on truck trailers is almost as reflective and covers a much wider angle.

SOLAS = Safety Of Life At Sea, an international agreement on safety equipment, crew training, and ship operations that has been put into law by most maritime countries.

I've painted helmets silver with this:
