Hey guys, I have fu**ed up,
After a long day of work, I went to refill petrol on my commuter journey, I went to a new petrol station and made a terrible mistake: I filled a full tank of DIESEL on my vstrom! I just realised my mistake when after starting, the bike stopped. I got a hose and drain the diesel out of the tank, and refiled with petrol agin, after a while I got the bike to start and rode it a lot that night after no more strange noises or lack of power was noticed. I left the bike a day with out turning on and now tried to start it again... but is not starting now. I had to use the first time my car to jump start the bike as the battery went flat after trying to start it for a while. I did the same the second time as the battery cant handle the continuos turn on attempts with out recharging with the motor. so how to clean the diesel out of my bike please. can I do it?, i just have basic tools and mechanics knowledge; or should i take it to a proper mechanic? I have 15 years riding bikes and never made this mistake haha. Any advice is greatly appreciated. thanks! |

Change fuel pump and filter, or disassembly and wash with thiner
If possible take injector to clean with the proper machine change injectors filters Change sparks all off them And keep trying with a fully charge battery i will put some (drops) of fuel in the piston chamber to help better ignition also all hose for fuel take out and clean If all fails take to a mechanic I'm sure its nothing serious Good luck please up date it was a mistake thats all Sent from my iPad using MO Free |

Got a hose and drained it ? ... what does that mean
Yes/ no petcock so pump unscrewing is only way to completely drain it. I would be that turning it over and dumping out from the filler would be adequate. Diesel is just light oil there is nothing evil about it. No your motor will not run on it but it should not have done any "damage". It is thicker, it may have had a little water, and probably oil fouled your plugs. Take tank off and dump it Disconnect the fuel delivery hose at the injector body Put in like a gallon of gas and hook up electrics Pump the gas through/and might as well get a fuel flow check at the same time Change spark plugs that should do it

My wife did that with our 4 Runner. Cost 600 bucks for a system clean at the dealer. You should be able to follow the instructions above and be OK.

Learn from this man....you should have said your wife borrowed the bike and filled it with diesel. |

I was on a trip with a buddy who put almost a gal of diesel in his 1800 gold wing before he noticed it. He then switched to gasoline filled it up and we continued on without incident or a problem what so ever I was amazed. The gold wing fuel tank holds 6.6 I think so hopefully if you can get the Strom running again just try and run what's left out.

buy a fuel line off flea bay for 10 bucks
Take off your tank take out the spark plugs drain the tank put the tank back on the bike with the rear of the tank raised and the fuel line you purchased off flea bay attached and in a drain can put some gas in the tank. I'd go with 2-3 gallons Turn your switch on to apply 12 volts to the pump and run the gas out. Do it in spurts a little at a time till it runs clean Give the gas to a neighbor you hate for his lawn mower put the real fuel hose back on the tank Put more gas in and make sure you always have gas in the tank so the fuel pump doesn't run hot hit the starter and turn the bike over do this many times during the day to push the diesel through your system into the cylinders that don't have spark plugs when you first start doing this you will smell diesel. Later in the day after several times you will smell gas put in your new spark plugs start the bike fill the bike up and run injector cleaner through every tank for like 3 or 4 tanks This is what I would do, others may try something better

Clean or change your plugs and keep adding fresh gas until it's cleaned out!!!!

I made the same idiotic mistake a couple years ago, while in the US, where the pump could actually have been mistaken, if not paying a bit closer attention, doh!
Anyway, simply took the tank off, dumped it entirely, then re-filled with the correct fuel, and it chugged an coughed, but ended up starting and running. I added a half can of Seafoam to the new fuel too. There's actually VERY little diesel that gets into the system before the motor stops running. I then took it for a good 45min cruise on the highway, and it was good to go. I did not change the plugs, filer or fuel pump, and the bike always ran absolutely perfect. This was on a 2009 Vstrom 650. Last edited by CHIA; 09-23-2012 at 12:59 PM. |

I was on a group ride once when a gal riding a MuZ Scorpion filled up with the green handle, someoneelse noticed as she finished and put the handle back on the pump, luckily before she started it up
took tank off, dumped the diesel in a 5 gallon pail the garage had reassembled bike, refilled with gasoline, no issues
