I ran out of gas once, about 25 miles after the last bar started blinking. Then put 5.587 gallons in the tank. So it would seem that about 0.2 gallons of the 5.8 gallon capacity are not usable.
That sounds about right.
I "wonder" if the published fuel capacity of our tanks is given before the fuel pump/guage arm assembly is installed????
I would guess that the tank capacity is calculated by its designed dimensions, without consideration of the apparatus inside or the fact that it cannot be filled to complete capacity because of the air space around the filler neck.

It's like anything else related to "official" specs: the manufacturers put their best foot forward even if it's not into the real world.

In my last 9 fuel stops, I have always gone around 15 miles after the last bar starts blinking. My fill ups have averaged 4.82 gallons, so I know I have around one gallon of fuel (and around 52 miles) left.
