Has anyone used the 55w HID light kit? Just wondering if heat would be an issue.

The issue is an insane amount of light. The 35W HIDs put out more light than 55 watt halogens. I wouldn't consider 55W HIDs on the street and hope anyone running them at night attracts the police as they should. Off road is a different story and 55W HID running lights are amazing.

I know that for offload at least, I was disappointed in 35w. And I was also wondering if they were even legal?

No conversion replacing incandescent lamps with HID lamps is street legal. I run 35W HIDs but pay careful attention to aim and use 4300K lamps. V-Strom headlight reflectors seem to do a good job controlling HID lamps. If people were flashing their brights at me, I'd take them out. If you want more light than 35W HIDs off road, add driving lights.

Yeah, no kidding. I faced a monster pickup truck on local streets with 4 of them shining on me. That guy should be arrested for assault.
