The buffeting and wind thread...the only one!!!!! Except for the 2012+ DL650.

I ride a 2010 DL1000 and as with some others, I don't get what could be called buffeting but the turbulence and the noise from it is annoying. The bike always has a Wolfman Light tankbag in place and I usually have my Garmin Colorado mounted high on the left hand grip. I found the original screen effective for its size but it wasn't high enough for me in the top position (I'm 5' 9") so I added a Madstad. That improved things but there was still substantial buffeting so I then added a California Scientific Shorty screen and that again was a substantial improvement but there was still turbulence. On a recent trip the bike was dropped and the left hand mirror cracked so, rather than order the expensive OE mirror, I hunted down a set of more aerodynamic mirrors. I tried these Motorcycle Mirrors Honda FJS600 CBF Hornet600 07-11 Black Rearview Mirror | eBay. I had read the reports about the stock mirrors being a major culprit but I was surprised at the near total lack of turbulence after I installed these. The air flow is smooth and the only noise is the air flowing over my Nolan N102 helmet. I have three other bikes, all with screens, and the DL1000 is now by far the nicest in terms of turbulence. The mirrors look like they belong on the bike, the quality isn't bad for an aftermarket mirror and the ball joint seems stiff enough to hold its position. They are slightly smaller and are lower than than the stock mirrors and I presently see too much of my shoulder so the next step will be 1.5" offset brackets. From reports, the offset should further reduce the tendency to turbulence.

I'm 6'1 using the Large Givi screen and Madstat in the near full position below 65-70 things were OK but above 70 I could feel this air rushing upward buffeting the top of my head, to the point of almost making me dizzy. I also felt like the top of the windshield was fluttering due to flex, another possible source of problems, and following traffic, particularly larger vehicles or trucks made it worse. So I lowered the windshield approx 2-3" and tilted it slightly back, big improvement. I havent done enough miles yet to determine how good its going to be, but that helped me. Ditching those flexy bars helped feel too. Bike has a much crisper feeling handling wise.

Ha i love the wind on a motorcycle!! If you guys want to cry about wind go get a car. Wind is part of what makes them fun and exciting.

It is not the wind silly. It's the buffeting that we object to.

I think you need to check your speedometers. They all seem to be reading about 15 fast.

All speed claims of speeds are Verified by either GPS and speedo healer units together, But always a GPS on board.

I am a little taller and don't have the problem. I wonder if they sell wind shields for the side of the shocks, I have seen them on cruisers.

I've read through 50 pages of this thread and because IndianRider is my height and inseam is the same as mine AND because his solution corroborates those that found filling in the "inside corner" of the front fairing helpful- I'm going to take his advice. (Post #501: Thanks Indian!)

My other bike is a '90 K100LT with a corbin low seat. There is never any buffeting. I got quite used to looking through the Parabellum screen.

When I look at the pics on I.R.'s post, the Givi screen in the front view makes a nice continuous front fairing area with good side coverage, something everyone agrees is part of the problem with these bikes, particularly regarding updrafts to the chin....
I must say though, I'm doing this deal now partly because I can afford to (not always the case) and because Pat Walsh is running a smokin' combi deal until the end of the month
I haven't actually noticed buffeting problems on my Wee but I've only been able to put 200 miles on it so far. The previous owner installed Aprilia mirrors, so that could be part of the reason.
I'm motivated for the bigger screen for the cold weather riding I expect to do in the coming months. The Madstad is just a no brainer for me. I like looking OVER my stock shield.
