I'm thinking of buying a wee. I took one for a test ride this morning and experienced the head buffeting. I'm 5ft10".
I'm curious. For those of you who continue to experience problems, if you could go back in time, would you still buy the v-strom?
Absolutely.
You can ride 2 up comfortably, it gets decent mileage, and it's pretty quick in any gear thanks to the 1000's beefy torque curve...what is not to like?

And list said before, when wind noise is the only problem then why would you not want one?

We only hear complaints from those with the problem. Those without it seldom complain. There are far more in the latter category than the former.

I just wanted to give my two cents (again.) I've had BAD problems with buffeting. I'm 5"11". I have a lousy helmet. Touring at high speed was a chore rather than a joy. The previous owner of the bike probably agreed. The bike came with two windshields and was less than six months old with 6000 miles. I've considered selling it myself more than once because of the problem.

Everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) told me to get a MadStad. Having already spent a good deal of money on a touring lip (that did little to nothing to fix the problem) I was gunshy about spending any more money.

But Cavehamster's needling and recent memories of a blurry trip to the Northwest sent me to my keyboard to get one.

I now have a problem with speeding. I had unconsciously been using head vibration to judge my speed. In it's absence I hit 90MPH (real, not gauge) before I knew it on the trial run.

So yes, it does everything it claims. I should have bought one with the bike. I would buy the bike again with no hesitation. I would tell the salesman that I'm walkng out unless he throws in the MadStad. I recommend you do the same.

Appreciate the replies regarding my question quoted above. I am listening and would like to hear more opinions. I sure do like everything else about the bike. I don't think I could ride it unless I am able to resolve the wind buffeting to a certain extent. It gave me a weird feeling - kind of like when you open one of the back windows of your car on a freeway. Everything else about the bike is brilliant.

If anyone wishes to "confess" their opinion via private message I will keep your opinion confidential.

PUGMAHORN,
I BOUGHT MY 650 ABOUT 3 WEEKS AGO. HAD A 180 MI RIDE HOME FROM
THE DEALER. TOOK THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY. LEAVES WERE AT THIER PEAK
COLOR. WOULD HAVE BEEN THE BEST ride of my life except buffeting and
wind pop. I was jello by the time I got home. Lived with it for about a week
and thought " I can't ride like this. It's no fun at all" and ordered a Cal Sci
Extra large screen. It took out 80% of the problem, but still not good
enough. I then sealed my face shield with a custom silicon gasket. Helped
alot. I then added washers to the bottom of windshield to rake it back some.
A little help. My next step is the Madstad mount. If that doesn't fix it,
I don't know what next. It is livable with the way it is now, but I want
better. I also made an air spoiler out of playdough on the top of my
helmet and it took away the buffetting, but it keeps falling off. Seems
to add just enough down force to keep the helmet from bobbling around.
This is with the new screen. I don't know if it would help with the stock
set up. But sealing the faceshield was a big help with noise. Let me know
if you want to know how to make a custom permanent gasket. It's easy
& takes 10 min. The writeup would take that long.....good luck.

Default Buffeting?: Cervical collar

This probably sounds weird but last winter I got sick of my head bouncing around on long trips on my SV650. I bought a cervical collar at the local drug store for around $10. It completely seals the area between your shoulders and the bottom of the helmet. It also completely eliminated the helmet buffeting and wind noise. The new to me DL1000 has a weird looking windshield, maybe a cut down Cee Bailey with a laminar lip that does not have a wind buffeting issue so I have not tried the cervical collar with it. But if it's a problem for you, you might be able to solve it for $10.
Tom

I own the Wee and have experienced some buffeting with the stock windshield here and there depending on how fast I am going. One of the things I did notice with the old Givi Highway screen was that the buffeting stopped around my head, but the wind that was flowing around my torso made me vibrate all over.
Initially I thought may be it was due to my jacket being too loose. With the highway screen on and no tank bag after a long ride, I did notice a buzzing/howl coming up through the fairing in front of the handle bars. I put the short stock screen on and voila, it stopped.

Now I have the new shorter wind screen due to some Nawb kicking my bike over (Insurance claim, See Vandalized In Lloydminster for the story) and have to find out if I will have the same issues. Look forward to doing the testing, just wish i didn't have to!

I had seen a thread or a post somewhere with small 1" sized NACA vents cut into the windshield and the results were favourable. I realize of course but the page i saw described the effects and results of using two of these vents.

I KNOW I SAW THEM!!! Has anyone else seen these? I just spent 20mins googling and youtubing to no avail. Just curious if anyone can help me out with this, because i have considered doing this with some plexiglass/lexan to see if it would work.

Well this is not 1" naca vents, nor can I take full credit for it, but this posting is what I used to cut the duct.
Showin' my windshield mods.

Here are the results from my bike, stock shield with a "naca" duct cut into it..

The results? Very impressive reduction in buffeting (90% reduction) and a well worth free modification to the windshield. I do not think that the shape is what does the trick (a square would work) but the fact that you are letting more air behind the shield to prevent the vacuum from pulling the turbulence back down. The shield is on the "3rd" position.

The 1" naca ducts cut I think were on advrider, done on a BMW.
