Default Chain Lube

Webbikeworld just updated its review of Dupont Multi-Use Dry, Wax Lubricant and a new product called Dupont Teflon Chain-Saver, Dry Self-Cleaning Chain Lube. Excellent products that are cheaper than most chain lubes, although I can only find the Multi-Use at Lowe's.

Did I read the article correctly, reapply every 50-75 miles? Does that go for the Multi Use as well? I've been going several hundred miles between applications.

Only if you want the "self-cleaning" characteristics.

From the article:

Quote:
DuPont told us that the "self-cleaning" characteristics of Multi-Use means that it should be reapplied "every 50 to 75 miles".
Otherwise, apply every other gas fillup, or after riding in water/in the rain.

I started using dry about 1,500 miles ago, it seems to work fine. It is not as messy as dino oil or the spray waxes. Just changed tires and the chain appears to be well lubricated. I lube after each significant ride.

When to lube chain?

I have always heard about 500 miles when driving in normal situations. I usually do it every 400 miles or so myself.

I compared the list of "active ingredients" listed on the cans of the two duPont lubes and they are exactly the same and in the same order. The multi-use was $1 cheaper per can, so I just bought that. My take is they are probably the exact same product in differently labled cans targeting two different markets.

Upon this recommendation, I found the Chain Saver online. Sprayed it on a few days ago. Rode 250 miles yesterday without fling!

If you had read the article, you would have noticed that they said the exact same thing...EXCEPT...the Chain Saver uses higher amounts of both teflon and molybdenum. They both also contain calcium stearate, a cleaning agent, as noted by the article.

They also appear different when applied to the chain. The Chain Saver is thicker, while the Multi-Use is a little more liquidy.
