I posted this over on the Shinko 705 thread on ADVrider, but I figured I'd post it here as well. There seems to be a lot of debate over whether 33 psi is too little to run in the 705s on our bikes. So, I emailed Shinko USA yesterday to ask them about recommended tire pressures for the 705 on a V-Strom.

Here's what I wrote:

I would start with 38 psi front and 34 rear.

Bump up the rear to 36 psi when running under heavier loads. The rear is marked 33 psi max, but Shinko is now changing that to 36 psi.

I have about 5,000 miles on my 705 front and anakee rear combo and they are working GREAT.The 705 works really well in the rain also.

I have 8,000 miles on the rear and have had excellent results running 33-36 psi loaded on a dl 650. I have only had them on my bike for about 1 month, but overall, they have proven themselves to me on all surfaces. They held up great in severe rain as well as up to 100 miles per day on rocky gravel roads. I should get 10K out of them. I am sold on the 705's

I am sooo hopeful that my defective tire is just that....a single defective tire. I have two more, brand new rears to go through and hope they hold up well.

Kudos to Bike Bandit for giving me a 100% exchange...and pay the shipping both ways.

Warhammer thanks for sending out the email to Shinko.

I'll be adding a few extra PSI into mine following the return email that you posted.


I only have 400 hundred miles on my set so far but it's holding up well. Im planning on taking a trip at the end month so it will give me more seat time with the tires then.

Guys, I am planning a big trip into Mexico, 30 days, 7-8000 miles. I am going to put new tires on but I can't decide which. I like the Shinko's for the price and versatility, but I am worried they might not hold up for the whole trip. What do you guys think? I have been recommended to use a Tourance/Anakee in the rear and a Heidenau K60 up front. Any thoughts? I do plan on doing some dirt but probably only 25% of the time. Just me with luggage.

been running them for almost 4,000 miles and for the price I love them. they will outlast the Bridgestones they replaced for half the money.
just recently i have been reading reports of the rear delaminating on the GS1200s. a much heavier bike. it has some worried and they are returning them to their retailers. my tires look fine with road miles only. i am not the least bit worried about mine failing BUT i ride local. I would not use them for such a trip. however I will continue to use them on my commuter.

OH!! you might get more hits if you start a new thread.

Shinko 705's are a great tire... with some issues. My personal experiences are: 25-30% Dirt/Gravel/Other - rest is tarmac of varying quality. The tires do great on all surfaces.. wet/dry/dirt/gravel/etc... I was VERY impressed.. all the while keeping an eye on the hairline cracks forming around the lugs.. no biggie.. every aggressive tire Ive owned developed these to some degree... @ around 5 or 6K some of the cracks started to turn into what appear to be "soft" spots in the tire.. causing small, but intimidating bulges in a few spots on the tire. Ive since contacted Shinko and it seems as though they are going to work with me on getting the tire replaced as it still has plenty of tread life. They also now recomend inflating the tire to 36psi in the rear. Will this help? I dont know? Guess Ill see.

Too make a long story short, its a great tire... but does appear to have some issues... did I say that already ??? So until they get the issues fully resolved, I wouldnt recomend it for such a long trip... or buy 2 rears and strap the extra to your bike and take it with you... if or when a problem develops.. you got a spare..

Really, id imagine youre gonna be using up any tire you buy doing 25% dirt over an 8K trip... some wont last half that long... or so ive read...
