Hi all! Just wondering if anyone with a givi or kappa monokey rack could advise; is the top part of the mount basically just a slam lock? If so, has anyone tried mounting a case using such a product bought off the shelf at a diy store? I'm aware of the difficulties in getting to the lock once it's mounted and such but theoretically could it be mounted with such a device? Thanks
If you are referring to the mounts with buttons at the bottom and a catch at the top, there are a couple variences. One is a welded catch at the top and another is attached with bolts.
The original Suzuki bag frames has a bolted catch. I took off the buttons and catch and used those holes to mount a Pelican like case.
Don't know if any DYI stores will have compatible devices to put on a different case.
Some folks get harware for QD from one of the case maker, I think. I have worked out a QD for my set up but leave the cases on all the time.
Yeah, I understand what you mean but I'm a bit tight. Can't help but feel the draw to something more budget friendly. The item in the link is small and reasonably priced and I'm happy for the key to be reached from inside. Just curious as to if this is the sort of thing g that would happily work (it's the moulded plastic attached to the frame kind of mount, the pl3101). Obviously it might not be bombproof but in a spill it's handy to have a weak point so it breaks there and not your sub-frame or rack, right?

I had purchased locks just like these, but I could not see an easy way to mount them. I secured two subsequent sets of Pelican-style cases using clevis pins through the case and the holes in the upper part of the Givi rack where the latch is bolted on. Then, if the case is locked with a padlock, no one can get to the hitch pins on the inside to remove the clevis pins. It worked for me and was cheap. It allowed me to quickly remove the cases if needed. Some people use bolts with threaded knobs on the inside. Same idea.
I would say the basic answer to your question is "yes".
Here's a pic of the latch on a Kappa case. The latch is spring loaded and pops/slams into place. One difference I see as compared to a latch from a DIY store is the Kappa latch has ledges on the sides. It seems those may add some lateral stability to keep things from jarring loose.
Post detailed pics if you complete this project. I've been contemplating building a quick release backrest to mount the Givi rack. Of course I would need to be confident in the procedure before putting my wife on back of the bike with a homemade solution.
I did what John Vstrom did. Only I opted for using bolts rather than the clevis pins I bought. I got some 1/4X20 threaded knobs and bolts but haven't used them for removal.
I just checked, the clevis pin and the knob are on the left bag and the right bag has 1/4X20 bolts and nuts.
I bent flat stock into 'S' hooks to hang the bags on the lower frame section.
Cheers all. Looking at that wingstrom, if I took a lock with a much wider "tooth" I could shave a bit off the sides and achieve similar results? I can see myself having to get a third pelican case after I completely :|:|:|:| up the first one and decide to just bolt on the other two, thus saving bugger-all money! ?
If you want to use pelican cases, I say just bolt them to the rack directly, use U-bolts and wingnuts on the insides if you want them to be easily removable.
Or just buy a used set of Givi cases if your goal is to save money.
Yeah, point taken. I just love the hardcore build and look of the pelis, the idea of getting my hands dirty with a build, the banter on forums about this sort of thing from like minded individuals and the achievement when you get something done yourself.
I'm a chef by trade, with no electrical experience and recently added a switched fuse box to my glee before farkling it up. Sure, I could have taken it to the garage and gotten it it done but where's the fun in that?
My bike came with SW Motech racks. I bolted Pelican 1550s to them. I liked that I could chose the position somewhat of where and how high or low the cases would sit. After some debate I bolted the top rather than the bottom. I use some cheap bags, like beach bags, I got at Target to pack my things in and put them in the Pelicans. With the top attached and the case open, it is easy to lay the bag in the bottom and then close it. YMMV. I made a stop out of small rope like paracord to keep the case from opening farther than needed. Those cases work great. I think they were $200 shipped from EBay.
Good luck with your project. I think bolting them on and using bags for your stuff is way easier than removable cases. Most people end up leaving the cases on and using bags.
Good advice. I guess if I were to buy the QR PLR3101 I could bolt them on and take them off as needed.
All so confusing! What to do, what to do....? Just found out I'm to become a father so not sure when that big trip is coming and I don't use the bike for commuting or anything so there's no rush.
Here, here! I place mine so they were parallel to the ground. Nice and flat so when I placed something on them it stayed there.
Those oddly angled bags I was told were positioned so the bag wouldn't drag on the ground in turns.
That's more aggressive than what I want to ride.
Seahorse SE-720 cases are clones of the Pelican 1550s I believe. But the Seahorse cases are only $55 from here: Seahorse SE-720 - Waterproof Case. The locking latches are awfully convenient. I've been running mine for 5 or 6 years now and they are still doing great.
Fred, you got it. I even cut off the handle mounts to give me mo room on top of the case.
oh, after 5 years you seem to have dirth of stickers. Ain't 'chu been no where of note?
Those photos were taken over 6 years ago (I just checked) when the cases were brand new.
They do have a few stickers on them now, but honestly I'm not a big fan of that look and am considering removing most of them. The only ones I really like are the retro-reflective Twisted Throttle triangles that I have facing rearward for night conspicuity, and my ADVriders New England Pie-o-rama sticker. That one stays! :drool5:
The racks I have are SW Motech Evo. The entire rack can be quick disconnected from the bike with 1/4 turn Dzuz fasteners, so one could just drill and bolt the bags to rack with some large fender washers on the inside.
Never being one to settle on "good enough", I decided to mount mine using the Happy Trails Pannier Mounting Kit pucks. That allows you to remove the bags from the racks and leave the racks still mounted. This is how you would have to do it if you don't have the Evo type of quick release racks.
Shaved the ridges off the back side of the Seahorse boxes to let them fit flush
After figuring out how I wanted them to sit on the bike, I drilled and fit the two bottom stationary pucks first, then hooked the bag onto those to measure and mark the two top, moveable pucks with the knobs. Did all of that on one bag, then I put the two bags on the floor back to back to transfer the hole locations so they sit evenly side to side.
Putting the upper two pucks in the corners keeps the bags from sliding forward and backward.
The pucks have changed a little since 2010, and are no longer one piece aluminum, but they work about the same way.
Rven, I mounted my Sea Horse to the origina Suzuki case frames.
There are QD mounts for some boxes that ca be adapted, I made my mods to allow for QD, I just don't bother using that feature and leave the cases on all the time.
That's a great Sea Horse link too, thanks.
Wowzer, that Happy Trails hardware comes at a premium. I got my handles at the hardware store and bent up some steel stock from the same harware store to hang the bags on the lower mount.
Definetly not as elegant though.
Yeah, they are proud of them. Back when I bought them they were $50. But they do allow you to quickly remove the bags, which is nice for doing maintenance. And because the knobs are inside of the locked bags they can't be removed from the racks, so are secure as long as the racks aren't easily removed.
One word of warning to anyone going with these pucks. Every time you mount the bags, make sure the knob/screws are tight. I lost one of my old style pucks because I didn't tighten it enough. Maybe adding lock washers under the knobs would prevent that. Or don't be a limp wrist like I was.
Yeah, a 10 cent star washer can take a lot of vibes. The knob I have in one bag though hasn't loosened in a few years.
Just checked, I had to get a pair of channel locks to get the knob loose. It had become one with the bolt.
