LED Questions

I've seen several posts and I'm confused because there's a lot of conflicting info so I would like to clarify... I'm trying to increase my bikes visibility and would like to go brighter for the turn signals. In my mind the best way to do this would be to go LED. Now, I understand there is issues with the flasher because the LED bulbs draw less current. I'm not great with electrical but would something like this work?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003UN4FXW..._Ze6YybN393DHG

And if so, just use in conjunction with a Amber 1157 LED bulbs?

Is there an option to turn the Signals into running lights?

Any good options to brighten the tail light?

Cheers!

Yep - that's the flasher you will need. No it will not convert to running lights.
These are what I used for teh turn signals:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017386GLS/

In addition you can improve the visibility *immensely* by painting the interior white or silver.
I just used flat white spray paint I had left over.

On the advice of other members I bought this for my brake light. Huge improvement plus built in flasher to get attention.

Exactly what Brojon says. Tail light bulb is great for plug n play. I used a bright aluminum ducting tape to line my turn signals, but I'd bet a gloss white paint would work as well.

LED Info

Signal Dynamics and Custom dynamics, and others offer gizmos that will convert the turn signals to running lights. If you install the Custom Dynamics' 48 LET clusters in the turn signals, as I have, the lights would be steady on all the time and flash off when you use the turn signals. The clusters are very bright and may be more than what you want as running lights. Richland Rick has teamed up with Signal Dynamics and offers an easier to install gizmo. He is a preferred vendor so see if his application will work. Regarding the tail light/stop light: The turn signals use an 1156 SAE base so the whole cluster lights up. They sell these clusters in 1156 base as white or amber LED and you should get amber as some Vstroms have white lens with amber halogen bulbs, and other (older models) have amber lenses where you should use the amber LED cluster. But, the taillight OEM bulb is an 1157 SAE base and it has two halogen elements. The 1156 base cluster uses a pig tail wire connection between the cluster and the base, which screws into the 1156 receptical in the turn signal. The 1157 cluster is a one piece device and you cannot insert in into the hole in the back of the tail light assymb after you remove the bulb. To make it work, as I have, you have to remove the rear fender, use a heat gun to free of the adhesive holding the red lense to the tail light assymb box, break and remove some of the black plastic tail light assymb box plastic to get the 2 large LED cluster disks to fit and reglue the red lense onto the assymb box. The result is much brighter than OEM, brake light and tail light but doing the mod is involved. I needed help and am happy with result. Riding buddy says my tail/brake light is definitely brighter but is also round so only some of the red lens is illuminated. The 48 LED clusters are $25 so this is a mod you have to want to do for the safety aspect. When I hit my 4-way flashers coming into an intersection, so far, all the potentially conflicting operators halt, look again, say WTF, and let me sneak through: I light up light like garbage truck. Riding buddy seeing the effect, installed the clusters in his turn signals but not the tail lights. I have not reduced the higher flash rate because it looks more cop-like.

Hey that's my humble website there! (Paleo Gyan ? Experiences from the real world (Motorcycles, Paleo Living, Rock climbing, etc) ? Sharing my humble opinion on subjects that excite yours truly ? Paleo living, running, secular spirituality, photography, motorcycling, LGBTQ rights, Podca) Yes that linked article is pretty self-explanatory in terms of how I converted my now "LED Turn Lights" into super bright full time running lights.

I also added additional LED Amber strips to my Handguards (super bright and ORANGE , looks muted in the picture below) to further improve and increase the "size" of my bike's "LIGHT TRIANGLE" - Does the article help? Please let me know if I can answer any specific questions.

Thanks for checking out the article!

Regards,
Vish

Hi THere! I think someone already linked to my personal blog/website above, but I thought I'd elaborate on your OP.

This link includes all pages I've used the tag "DL650"

Detailed How-to & Pictures are available for the following "lighting" mods to the Wee :-

1) Headlight Mod to use LED Low Power/High Output lighting (currently going strong after almost 12 months...!)

2) Replacing all Turn Signals with Amber LED bulbs (1157s) and the Rear Brake/Running light with RED LEDs (1156)

3) Converting Front Turn Signals into RUnning Lights

4) Adding Blinker Module to the Rear Lights to induce Brake light blinking when braking

5) Adding LED light strips to "supplement" front and rear turn signaling (LED string consume miniscule amounts of power, for a good return on light output)

Please let me know if you have any specific questions that I may be of help with. THanks, Ride safe!

Regards,
Vish

Don't want to get too crazy. And I've never messed with wiring before so I'll probably forgo the running lights for now. I dig the tail light bulbs though! Just plug and play?

Yup. All items I mentioned just drop in.
The whole running light thing seems to me a giant PITA with little return. Just my 2 cents.
Maybe the rear, but the fronts would be swamped by the headlights and it's easier to just go ahead and mount aux lighting that will be more useful.
