Mirrors on windshield

I am planning to build a new windshield support frame and new windshield so that I can move the mirrors from the handle bar to the windshield. This will place the mirrors higher and farther forward to allow looking at the mirrors without taking eyes off the road.

Has anyone done this on a Strom?

That can help in addition to stock mirrors if using convex mirrors but objects will be closer than they appear. Some do that to avoid head checks though I much prefer moving my head to check over my shoulder. Like it was said, if anything, mirrors need to be spaced wider or all you'll see is your own shoulders.

The goal is to have the mirrors close to the same width as oem, hence the custom support frame. The mirrors will be attached to the frame through the windshield.

I don't have any head buffeting due to the custom winshield currently mounted on the bike.

Thanks for the link and pictures, very interesting. What are the winglets you mounted on the lower crease, I assume made in your shop? Did they help a lot to get rid of buffeting?

Mine are covering the higher up crease that your screen covers so well. I have a different screen installed at the moment and am debating to modify the windstom screen to something closer to your setup. Its heavy gauge and probably difficult to bend, so I am a little reluctant to mess with it and mess it up completely.

I don't want to hijack your thread. Please respond in the winglet thread not to violate the rules; Winglets Link

Stick to mirror discussions. Windscreen discussions can only be discussed in the proper sticky thread or go to PM.

Interesting idea. I find the stock v-strom mirrors are among the largest, clearest, most ideally positioned and vibration free mirrors of any bike I've owned. Visibility to the rear is excellent with minimal eye shifting. Ugly? Maybe, but I wouldn't think of changing them. Be sure to post pics!

The project has begun. I decided to place the mirrors behind the windshield to allow windshield tilt adjustment and replacement without disturbing the mirrors.

The windshield is mounted directly to the aluminum supports using threaded inserts in the aluminum. This reduces windshield shake considerably. I will decide whether to use well nuts after I make the new wider windshield.

I took the opportunity to improve the mounting for the GPS and dashcam. The dashcam controls are now accessible without removing the windshield.

So far, at the narrowest mirror spacing, which is 1" wider than stock, rearward visibility is very good and there is a huge improvement in mirror use without taking eyes off the road. There is also a huge reduction in turbulence caused by the mirrors. As they are now, the mirrors are 8" farther forward and 4" higher than stock.

Due to the flexibility of the mirror test supports, the mirrors have the Harley shake. This should be reduced when I finish the final mirror supports, which will be much stiffer.

Welded steel support frame.

Aluminum windshield support.

Test rig to determine correct mirror spacing and angle.
