...but I want to find out if I can use my 'Strom battery to kick over one of my project bikes. It's an 82 model year Yamaha XJ550RH Seca. I'd rather not fork out for a new battery if I don't have to right away.

The Yamaha battery specs are 12N12A-4A/12V, 12AH. The Strom is 12V 43.2kC(12AH)/10 HR.

You should not have a problem. It looks like they are close in specs. Even if it's smaller you won't fry it in casual use. If you intend to crank for long periods because it won't start you can always use your car battery. I have done this on different bikes and it's not a problem. Twelve volts is twelve volts. Your bike won't pull anymore amps just because the battery is larger.
