It's a Well maintained 2002 DL1000 , 11K miles. The oil ends up dripping from the middle of the cases @ the split, and the trail seems to lead to the C/S Sprocket area....Ideas  ? Thanks ! please respond to : tz750a@excite.com

johnny,

I'm having an oil leak around the countershaft area also. Did you confirm that you leak was the seal? It's leaking pretty badly, about a quart every 300 miles.

It could be one of two seals from that area, the countershaft seal which can leak as a result of a chain to tight or wear or the clutch slave cylinder pushrods seal which can leak due to an accumaltion of grunge around it under the countershaft sprocket cover.

The only way to find out which is to remove the c/s cover and inspect, not a difficult task but the clutch lever must be tied back against the lever with velcro or wire or a piece of string before removing the slave cylinder. Then it just a matter of a few bolts to check it out.

i'm in the process of replacing clutch slave cyl push rod seal now, buggered up the 1st seal and another is on order. i did not secure the clutch lever before removing, did i contribute to the problem? and do i need to secure said lever before reinstalling slave cyl? thanx, jet

I don't know. I do know that the manual requires the lever be held prior to removal to prevent issues, exactly what I haven't researched. I would be very cautious and look for more information before you do compress the lever without the system intact though.
