If your planning on making it to this event you should be finding a place to stay NOW.. We are camping at Mt View camp ground which is right on the edge of town.. Showers, hot tub, pool, small C-store, and nice people..Everything is filling up fast so don't delay. We attended last year and had a blast. The folks that live in Baker City are great and treated us well. The best part are the planned rides. Some of the most beautiful twisty roads anyplace..Ride in the bottom of the deepest canyon in north America, (yes deeper than the Grand Canyon) then ride to the top and look back down into where you were just an hour or so before..

Dang! Gonna miss this one, too. I'm going to the Chief Joseph BMW rally from June 14-17 with a group of beemer friends..... camping it. Someone has to ride along to help keep those beemers running ;) I know I'll get someone fired-up with this comment, but having ridden to 4 beemer rally's, the only events that I've seen that's had more bikes break down are for HD.

Enjoy your ride!

We are staying at the Always Welcome Inn. We attended last year and it is quite an event, bigger yet this year. It will be fun.

sorry no pics but I did meet a couple of guys from your group - "pappa " and another guy - sorry I don't remember your name. Anywho they were on their way home after having attended the gtg in reno. Nice guys.

The rally had a very large Harley contingent - friendly, but mostly cruisers. The loops put together by the organizers (who did a great job!!) were some pretty twisty forest service roads (all paved) that linked to some rural 2 lane hwys that were pretty curvy themselves. The riding was fantastic and the scenery incredible. It was interesting to watch some of those larger/longer cruisers navigate the switchbacks. My wife rides a Honda cruiser and she scraped her floorboards several times.

It rained pretty good sunday so we skipped a fair portion of our intended route but I've already been looking over maps with the intention of heading back down in a week or two. We had a great time and have booked a room already for next year. kdub.

check out the report on www.katu.com
Sounds like it was a crash fest. Did anyone here witness any of that?

I wouldn't exactly call it a "crash fest". We rode the entire loop including all side trips with a extras thrown in on saturday (426 miles total). We did pass 1 accident. A guy swerved to miss on on coming vehicle on a tight, twisty forest service road near the Hells canyon overlook south of Joeseph. Cop said two vehicles met in the center of the road and the biker "went out of control and over the edge of the road". This officer also stated that he does not himself ride and didn't seem to be too pleased that others do. He was polite, professional and helpful. Anywho, he did say that the biker was not hurt too seriously just "bumped and scraped pretty good but nothing broken"

Taking the shuttle bus into downtown saturday night, the driver stated that their had been "12 accidents this weekend" Their was a headon collision near Sumpter where 2 women met in the center of the road a another bike 2 up that was part of one of thems group then went over the top of both of them. I did later speak to a paramedic that had responded to the scene that said that one of the women may lose her leg.

We road about 1035 miles this weekend total and did NOT witness any real serious stupidity - extreme speed, racing etc. What you had was a combination of seriously tight, twisty roads with a lot of elevation changes, little or no shoulders and not a lot of guard rails in places combined with some inexperienced riders (at least as far as those types of roads go) riding bikes that weren't made for those kinds of roads.

It's unfortunately PC to report that motorcyclists are out of control -crashing/dieing everyday.

People were friendly, well behaved, having a great time and the organizers did a fantastic job. As I have previously posted, we have already made plans to attend again next year. kdub. (Kevin)

news report also said that the weather was a factor.
I do notice that motorcycle accidents here in the metro area dont seem to be reported that often unless there is a fatality.
Typical of the media though, if there is a way to get the story wrong they fill find it.

Hi All:
Dana and I just got back from the Hell's Canyon rally. We did 1192 miles in 4 days, only 13.7 on Sunday because of the rain. Had to cancel our jet boat ride because of the weather, but went to a movie in their neat little 2-screen theater. The locals we ran into on Sunday kept appologizing for the rain, even though they have had a drought this year and really need it.

When you get that many riders together, you'll have the hotdoggers(saw 2 or 3), the slow, cautious types (lots of them) and everyone inbetween. All in all, everyone was friendly and curtious.

For those who plan to attend next year, like us, I recommend the Always Welcome Hotel. Nice rooms and great family-staff. On the east side of I-84, close enough to the action without all the loud pipes at 0-dark:30.

Will do a better ride report later.
