It's 99.9% likely I'll be getting a K7DL650 non-ABS within the next 2-6 weeks. I plan to take a week off somewhere between April and July for a solo tour of either Oregon, or a combination of Oregon, Washington, and/or northern California.

What would you consider "must ride" roads/tour routes? I've driven some roads in my car that I thought at the time, "Wow, this would be amazing on a motorcycle!" For example, highway 34 from Waldport to Philomath (http://oregonmotorcyclist.com/ridepage.php?page=hwy34)

I live in Sandy, half way between Portland and Mt. Hood so that would be my starting point.

There is a book that has a lot of good roads.
"Motorcycle Journeys Through the Pacific Northwest" covers Washington, Oregon and Idaho. It's in book stores and local bike shops. Mr. Fisherman and I got it for Christmas.

Scenic hwy 30 from Mosier to The Dalles.

242 from Mckenzie bridge to hwy 20.
218 from Shaniko to Fossil.
19 from Fossil to 26.
207 from Spray to Heppner.
101 from Astoria to Eureka.

142 from Lyle to Goldendale.
12 from Naches to I-5.
SR-14 near Wishram.
503 from Woodland to Battle Ground.
821 from Yakima to I-82.
97 over Blewett Pass.
20; The North Cascades Hwy.

Do those for a start.

Again, remembering roads traveled in a car ...

Highway 66 from Klamath Falls/Keno to Ashland. Very twisty yet scenic. My wife got really car sick which _really_ means it's got some curves. :-)

Forest road 48 from where it meets Highway 35 at White River (on the eastern slope of Mt. Hood) east to Wamic.

I will put in a vote for highway 96 in Northern California, even if it isn't really in the NW. 150 miles of twisties along the Kalamath river, very little traffic, and only 3 towns large enough to have a gas station.

If you can get to Eastern Or, I mean the real eastern Or, not Bend. You might take the road out of LaGrande to Joseph then over the top of the mt. and down into Hells Canyon then follow the Snake river up stream to Halfway then on to Baker. That puts you back on I-84.. The road from Joseph to Hells Canyon doesn't open untill the end of May though..

We caged it last Hell's Canyon Rally because we both had been sick and didn't want a relaps. On the way back we went to Joseph. Definitely on our list again this year. We may do that route during the weekend this year.

At one time I had posted several good routes, complete with maps and directions, but they seem to have disappeared. I even created a thread for rides. It seems to have disappeared also.

I was formerly "Open_Range", but forgot me password and I'm on travel at the moment.

Doug-in-Skamania,

I lost some threads too, but a helpful Stromtrooper guided me to the "User CP" function, and explained that I could change some options to let me find threads older than one month, which is the default. Now I can go as far back in time as I like. Would you like to see a picture of Thomas Jefferson on his V-Strom? Too bad he didn't have one; it would have saved his horse a lot of trouble!

stevewz,

I like Washington Route 14 eastward from Vancouver Washington along the north shore of the Columbia.

If you go to the Canadian Vancouver, you can enjoy highway 99 north from there to Pemberton BC, but it's a tad scary. There are no guard rails, so the piles of wrecked Harleys at the bottoms of gorges detract from the view.

If you go as far east as Idaho, consider riding from Arco, or at least from Challis, along US93 to Salmon. This route follows the rampaging Salmon River downstream, and it's lovely.

That's about all I know about your part of the world. I reckon you can go just about anywhere and meet cheerful people and see lovely scenery and enjoy whatever curves you like.

Enjoy your trip ... as if you have a choice.

Keith

Great maps - thanks Doug. I replied to the original thread as a test and *presto* it's back on the main page!:D
