This from a Thread I did "way back when". . . .

Shortly after I installed my HT panniers, I saw a thread about using a chunk of 4"
PVC for a storage device on the "No Exhaust" side of the 6Fiddy. Neato I thought
except I really didn't want to weld on or hack or change the original HT side mount racks.

So for the past 5 months I've had this 4" X 17" hunk of PVC sitting on my
workbench. The day before yesterday I finally got off my ass and
bumbled/stumbled thru the "pennytech" Engineering & installation" process. http://vstrom.info/forum/forum_images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a296/Compared2What/Cycle%20Stuff/Garage/65PVCPennyTechRearView.jpg

Since I occasionally "strap" other items in that area I decided to mount the tube in
a fashion that would allow it to (1 bolt) be removed easily.

After deciding roughly where I wanted the tube to sit, I fabricated a small L
bracket out of some aluminum, drilled a few holes (yea I know my chamfer job on
one of the holes ain't that great) for mounting and rounded up a stainless clamp,
bolted one end up and I was ready to tackle the rear mounting.

I kinda remember picking up these Velcro "devices" at my local Home Depot back
when I was a "boat person". The larger of the two was a perfect fit.

Small problem to be addressed: The "Eye" is an oval, not a round hole.
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a296/Compared2What/Cycle%20Stuff/Garage/65PVCPennyTechEye.jpg
A little more digging and I came up with a longer bolt for one of the HT brackets, a
pair of tiny rubber bushings (since the opening was oval shaped, not round) and a
fender washer.

Mounted the Strap, positioned the tube, tightened everything up and took it (and the
bike http://vstrom.info/forum/forum_images/smilies/biggrin.gif ) out for a 288 mile test thrash yeserday. Stayed in the pre-ordained
position, didn't come loose, allowed me to take my large book of topo maps with me.
http://vstrom.info/forum/forum_images/smilies/biggrin.gif aaaaaah the non-smell of success. (as opposed to the smell of burning/rubbing PVC I guess) http://vstrom.info/forum/forum_images/smilies/confused.gif

4 bucks for the PVC, about 6 or 7 for the two straps (if I remember correctly),
another buck for the various nylock nuts, bolts, washers and aluminum. The net
result is easy to take off and on (as required) inexpensive extra storage. Looks OK
too. http://vstrom.info/forum/forum_images/smilies/cool.gif

Hope this helps . . .

FANTASTIC!
I remember seeing you post awhile back and forgot were it was (ADV or here). What a beautiful job!!!!
This'll be my project for the winter.
Those were HT pannier racks right?
They look pretty secure.
Thanks again.

Glad I could help Fyr. Yep, HT Panniers and racks. Very secure and trouble free so far (20+K miles with the racks/panniers/PennyTechTube installed).

Don't forget to take pix of your project. . . .

This is my project for next month, too. But will have to adapt bracket to the side bag mounts I have on the bike.

What is the internal length of the tube?
They don't move at all when riding? aka no banging?

good news, I just put the happy trail rack on my bike.. and they actually welded another plate with holes to mount a tube like this!!!!! and they even gave instructions on how to make it with the rack instructions.. pretty cool if you ask me!!!!

So do you have to have the rack mounted to do this mod or is there a way to secure the tube without it? I've made those tool tubes before, but never mounted them to a Suzuki. I also haven't taken purchase of my Strom yet so I can't answer this for myself.:p

Here's a pic of mine...

$15 bucks and a heck of a bodge job if I do say so myself and I've got a great place to put raingear or a cover.

I'm both impatient and pragmatic so the brackets are functional and ugly. Originally I wanted to make it independent of the racks, but then I realized that I had no plans to take them off the bike, and that mounting them there would be MUCH easier. I'm a big fan of the compartment so far! Water tight and very useful. Good conversation piece too.

People keep asking me if I'm crazy because they think I've plugged an exhaust pipe!

Ok, lets try this again....

I originally just wanted my bags to hang straight, so I built the black piece of metal to hold the left bag even with the right. Then there was a big hole there between the bag and the bike. I like it better now. I used a right side heat shield...I just traced the cut on the top side to a piece of paper and transferred it to the bottom side. I think it turned out ok. The pictures should show most of what I did.

Very nice job, I like the way you hid the screws in the cap. I love the idea, its just seems very hard to come by a used stock endcap. If I could I would have one just like yours.

OK, I've been to Home Depot, Lowe's, and two other plumbing supply stores in my area and can't find the black tube/pipe anywhere. One older plumbing supply store where I had been referred told me "The black pipe was ABS, and they quit making that about 12 years ago when everyone switched to white PVC".

Sooo, where the heck is everyone getting the black 4" diameter stuff for this project?

Thanks for any assistance!

I am in process of this project utliizing the new HT designed pannier frame and the Wee end cap. Its how I spent the easter holiday as a matter of fact. I had to mold the new 4.0" Pvc to follow the line of the stock exhaust, but so far it coming out very clean. I will post pics one completed.

Last time I was at Lowe's they had 24" pieces of 4" ABS. You need to look in the plumbing section where all of the outdoor landscape drainage stuff is........

Also ask a plumber. ABS is used more often by pros than amateurs.

I used the white stuff and a can of flat black spray paint...

the PVC pipe is light enough and had enough in the way of caps/seals to make the job easy. The Home Depot I went to had black piping but it was significantly heavier and lacked some of the various attachments to make the job easier. You wouldn't want to use it for this project - it's some heavy duty stuff!
