Hey guys,
I know I've talked to a couple of you regarding a day ride after the Holidays so let's get busy with particulars regarding when, where, and how far. I was thinking about Angeles Crest or Malibu Canyon, but these are kinda short. Any ideas about routes would help a lot.
One note, I heard that Angeles Crest has just been repaved for several miles, that road would be great with fresh asphault. So let's get serious about this. We owe it to the rest of the "Snowbound Strommers" to get some fresh pic's up in this forum.

Hey Shep
Your info is correct about the repaving and the new stuff is a ilttle on the greasy side as new asphault can be. It also looked like they were not done yet as there was a lot of equipment still on the side of the road @ the turnouts. Keep me informed as I told you before I am always up for a ride.
whynot?

I found this link which describes many ( I think 13 last checked) day ride information in and around Ventura county.

I was on Angeles Crest 2 weeks ago. Very new pavement! In fact, some of it is still being laid! Angeles Crest stops short of going all the way at the moment. I made it up too Mt Willson and that was a GREAT view! My back tire pitched out a few times due too rocks on the road on the Mt Willson road. Would not reccomend it for that, plus the top is now closed. They close it on Dec 1st till sometime later.
Any other good suggestions?
P.S. I live on the 2. =)

Any details on the ride? I'd like to join. It's rare to see another Strom in these parts.

Working up some plans now. A little input would help. How many miles, what areas do we want to ride etc...
Any input would be appreciated.

The only problem with those rides in the Star is they were done on Harleys and are mostly BtoB rides. Eat ride 20 miles stop, drink, ride 20 miles, stop etc.

Gentlemen,
You need to figure out how to get Highway 33 (out of Ojai) to 166 to Cerro Noreste/Mil Potrero/Frazier Park (I wish it had one simple name!) into a big loop. The section of CN/MP/FP from 166 to Pine Mountain Village is fantastic - be careful. The section from Pine Mountain Village to Cuddy Valley is great if there is no traffic - really tight twisties. From Frazier Park you can get to the "backside" of the local mountains - jump on 5 south to 138 and then to "old Ridge Route" which becomes Pine Canyon. From there, you can take Lake Hughes back to civilization or continue on Pine Canyon which becomes Elizabeth Lake road to Palmdale and then work over to Sierra Highway and Angeles Forest highway to Angeles Crest.......coming out on La Canada, etc. A good mix of mountain twisties and rural towns with not too much civilization on the way. I would imagine on Jan 1, the traffic would be light... who knows?
Much of this is in the hills - dress warmly.

100% Agreement. . . 166 to Pine Mountain via Mil Potrero is a really fun road at any pace. But be aware, if it's been raining there's liable to be some dirt/sand/etc where you least expect it.

Just rode that two weeks ago. There was some frost/ice on the roads that made things interesting. I agree that this is one hell of a great road, and there's a coffee shop in Pine Mountain Village that has cinnamon rolls the size of your head!
How 'bout some input? Where do you guy's want to go? How far etc...

I just rode 33 today over to lockwood valley turn off, there was volcanic cinders on the last 5 miles on the front side and lots of ice over the top.

Okay guy's here's what I'm thinking. We can do a can do a canyon day over near Malibu. Start with Mulholland Hwy from Las Virgenes to its terminus at PCH. Then run PCH a couple miles south to Decker Canyon Rd. Decker Canyon back North to Encinal Canyon Rd. That cuts East and runs into Mulholland again, then take Kanan Dume south for a bit to Latigo Canyon Rd. Take Latigo Canyon down to PCH again, then South on PCH to Puerco Canyon Rd. Take that North to Mesa Peak Motorway, that runs into Castro Peak Motorway, then onto lower Brewster Motorway, to Mulholland. We can then run Mulholland back to the Rock Store for some grub.
Let me know if you like the route, then we can plan the day.

When I went too the Long Beach bike show, they handed out a free map showing great ride loops. I will scan it and post and maybe we can agree on one.

"The Angeles Crest Highway is normally closed in the wintertime from Islip Saddle to Vincent Gap due to rockfall and avalanche hazards. However, the winter storms of 2004-05 caused several landslides and significant damage to the highway. Thus, the highway never reopened summer of 2005. Damage to the highway was estimated to be over 4 million dollars as of November 2005. Terri Kasinga, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Transportation, stated in November 2005 "It is definitely not going to open until next spring (of 2006)".[1] However, a March 2006 storm caused even more extensive damage to the highway including a complete washout of a large section of roadway, further delaying the reopening of the highway. Total construction costs now exceed 10 million dollars. Pending the availability of construction funds to repair this new damage, construction is anticipated to begin spring of 2008. As of now this portion of the highway has been closed since October 2004.[1] The closure of the highway has caused concern for the California Department of Forestry because it hinders firefighting.[2]"
Angeles Crest is out. At least going all the way though is. I tried scanning my map, but my scanner wont work. Tried beating it. Did not fix it. I tried taking a photo of the map with my camera, and it ran out of batteries on the 1st shot. UGH! Its just not my day. The map is from Madmaps.com and it was free at the bike show.
Here are the 3 So-Cal loops I was able to get.
Palm Springs loop.
http://www.gibbageart.com/files/map/PS.jpg
Im not sure about Palm Springs. Only was out there twice, and in a cage.
Santa Barbara Loop.
http://www.gibbageart.com/files/map/SB.jpg
This one looks great, but only if weather permits. Right now, it dont.
Santa Ana Loop.
http://www.gibbageart.com/files/map/SA.jpg
This one looks like the best of the 3 for the time. It may be a little big at 225 miles, but we can cut it in half with the 15. I like El-Toro road and Ortega highway. I have not been all the way too Elsinor yet. There is also Cooks Corner road house.
I only have a few months of experance and 2000 miles on 2 wheels, so I will difurr to you guys. What do you think?

That Santa Ana Loop looks okay. I'd love to do that one (#2) in the summer.

Why's no. 5 called the Santa Barbra loop? Did you scan the wrong one?
That is a good ride, do it all the time. But it's a little chilly in the mountains right now, especially if you go all the way to Big Bear. Went out yesterday for a little run and didn't go to far due to the woosie factor kicking in, I don't like the cold. But a short ride is better than no ride at all:D

Santa Ana loop looks good to me, only problem might be 243 as far as weather. Just my 2 cents worth:)

Same here. 225 miles will be the longest ride I have yet to do! Maybe I should get a Gel seat for this ;)
The map I have gives a warning about the 243 and ice. Also says there are a lot of RV's by Lake Elsinor.
Cooks Corner and Lookout Roadhouse are two possible stops. So I think we agree on a route, now a when.

Here is the current status of SR243
"SR 243
[SAN BERNARDINO & RIVERSIDE CO.'S]
NO TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS ARE REPORTED FOR THIS ROUTE.
"
http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/sr243
If its now closed NOW, it wont be closed in Feb unless something drastic happens.
P.S. Its my birthday in Feb! Whoot! Feb 3rd seems fine. Gives us a few weeks to prep and get more riders in on it.

Hey All,
I'm a new guy on the block, just got a 1000 last Saturday (nothing like the 405 in the rain) I'm just getting back into riding after many years and would like to go along. I live up the 14 south of Palmdale, Angelas Crest is at my backdoor and can keep up with conditions there. I also work out in the Ventura area so I'm ready for the ride whereever it may begin.

Not like we did not run into it last trip ;)
Ya. All depends on conditions. Its close to spring and things are warming up, so its not a huge concern. It would be a freak chance any snow would fall at the end of Feb. Roads should be in good condition by the time we get there. Minus all the pot holes and chewed roads from the SUV's with chains.
