Specific Tail Bag

Hey all..

I usually do a good job of searching forums before I post, but I haven't had success in finding my answer, so here goes.

I'm looking for a tail bag (soft). I use my wee daily to commute to work. I wear a backback to carry some minimal items (newspaper, planner, occasional lunch, otehr small stuff). I would like to get rid of the backback and get a tail bag that could be used for the same things. HOWEVER, I've been searching for a tail bag with a "quick release" type mount. I don't really want to have to connect and undo bungie fixtures each time I jump on/off the bike. I would think that there are bags out there that connect permanently, but have like a zipper connect so I can take the bag with me.

I hope I explained clearly.. I basically want a bag that I can grab quick.

The Cortech soft tail bags don't have a quick-disconnect however they do have captive bungee cords that tuck into a sort of pouch on the bottom.

Those links are great! They also have some ATV bags that seem to have quick-releases.

Gee I feel like a shmuch because I just used this shot in a GPS thread, but its the best one I've got of the Cortech Sport.

I use mine commuting too. I hope you can see the bungee loops over the Strom rack points.
I took the hooks off the bungee's and cut then tied them into loops to just the right size.
They retract into the flap under the bag when I take it off. I can install/remove this bag in seconds.

Since this shot I have now cut/looped/tied the front bungees and they wrap around the grab handle and hook on the front pointy end of the grab handle.

Also would a laptop fit in there?YES!! I got caught in an absolute flood one evening and mine didn't leak a drop that I could tell. It comes with a rain cover (both of them do) but I didn't even have it installed that time and it still didn't leak.

The Sport tailbag is expandable. There are zippers on each side (you can barely see them in Ogre's photo above right where the white reflective stripes on the back end) that let it expand about 2" per side. A laptop should fit without any problems, however there is not a lot of padding in it. I just put a Dell Inspiron in mine to see if it would fit and it did. A bit of a squeeze getting it through the opening but I did get it in.

I hook mine a bit differently though. At the rear I wrap the bungees around the tail lights and then hhok them into the plastic tabs for the shoulder strap:

Not waterproof as is. Comes with a cover that does a pretty good job. I try to put things that CAN NOT get damp in plastic bags even with the cover. But it has never got wet inside with the cover on. Edit...Sorry Scraig, mine did leak thru the zipper sitting out in the rain w/out the cover.

Yea, I'm pretty sure you could get a laptop in it so long as it is not bigger than 13" x 16", the sides expand from 15" to 19" wide. You have to get creative with expanding a side and working it in thru the opening, but I have got things bigger than the opening in.

I'll try tonight unless someone else answers before then. We don't have any laptops here at work.

It holds a surprising amount of stuff for as small as it looks, You can really stuff the heck out of it.
It is expanded in this shot. I went for 5 days on the GSX with just it and a tank bag.

I'm really surprised. The evening I got caught in the rain with mine it was a torrential downpour. I was drenched when I got home, and it was only then that I thought about my tailbag. I figured everything in it was soaked (including my DayTimer with half my life in it!) but everything was bone dry.

Now that I think about it, I guess the difference is that I was moving and blocking most of the rain from the tailbag whereas yours was sitting still in the rain. I just know I was pleasantly surprised when I opened mine.

I also think loading may play into it.

Mine was fairly empty, the opening cover had a pool of water on it when I went out to the bike. Loaded up the the cover bows out and the water will run off.

Bottom line, put the rain cover on and forget about it. :)

Looks like we found a winner... That bag looks like a great option. Will check it out closer at my local Cycle Gear...

Anyone have any experience, or can compare, with the "Deluxe Tail Bag" from Cortech?

A buddy of mine has the Tourmaster Deluxe, its a barrel shape and holds quite bit more volume than the Cortech sport. Its also quite a bit wider and overhangs the bike a lot. It does not expand/contract.

The tourmaster also does not have the flap to hide the bungees nor does it have the clips to mate with the saddle bags, if that means anything to you.

I thought about getting the Tourmaster until I saw his and tried it. It was just too big, too much overhang on the bike for my taste. Very floppy looking empty.

FWIW we both commute on bikes. I use mine everyday, he only uses his on trips.

Take a look at the V-strom rack bag at magsbags.com. I have one and love it. It goes on and off the bike easily.

I've had a Motofizz bag from Aerostich for about 1 year. It uses four nylon straps with quick release buckles to hold the bag to the rear rack. I tried several other bags at dealers, but never found one that seemed as secure as the Motofizz. Comes in 3 sizes, I got the medium and it holds alot. You can see it at Aerostich.com. When you take the bag off there is a four buckle strap ( X shaped) that connects the four hold down straps so you don't have to remove the four hold down straps. Comes with a rain cover, haven't used it, have ridden in the rain without it and nothing got wet in the bag. Highly recommend.

I have been using an expandable Nelson Rigg tail bag for the last couple of years and like it.

I have used it on several different bikes and it has worked well on all of them.

I like the fact that it holds its shape even empty and is quick on and off.

I also picked up a set of there expandable saddlebags but haven't used them enough to decide how I like them.

I read about the tail bag last night, and after hitting 4 local dealers, found one. Nice clean simple deal. Matches my Cortech mini tank bag.
Price differential between dealers was almost $20.00. Got it for $54.00 plus tax.

This is probably late as you sound like you have made your choice, but I have a set of soft bags from Nelson Riggs. I have the DLSB-500 Deluxe Saddlebag System with the RTB-500 Rear Tote/Tail Bag. The saddle bags stay on my bike all the time, and the tail bag has clips that make it easy to take on and off.

I've got that Cortech super mini tank bag and that thing rocks. I'm sure the sport tail bag is just as nice, in fact I've been meaning to get one to match the tank bag.
